Best Gregg Shorthand Manual

I wrote this review originally in Dec. 2014. Since then I have learned more about Gregg. See my additional notes below

I fortunately found this book at my local library. It's my favorite Gregg Shorthand manual so far; it has: a chart of the alphabet, brief forms, and 100 frequently used words, great tips on how to learn shorthand quickly, tips on note-taking in general (aimed at college students like myself), a key to all exercises ranging on a number of short stories and great topics such as a short biography on Abraham Lincoln, early childhood education, first aid, hazards of smoking, the traits of successful people, essentials of having a good savings plan, etc. etc. Just like notes you would take in a classroom setting or job. You can have someone read you the key and then compare it with the book which is great. There's currently some used copies available here on amazon, but check your library also.

I still think Notehand is a great version of Gregg. It is great for someone who wants to learn gregg quickly (3 months to a 1+ year depending on your schedule. Don't overwhelm yourself though, a lesson or 2 a week is fine) and this stand-alone book will teach you everything you need to know. That said, Notehand was not designed for exact dictation. It was to improve college students notes, and with Notehand you will at least triple your handwriting speed, if not faster I'm sure.

It has 42 brief forms (memorized symbols), and compared to other systems is simpler. So sentences and long words may take more effort and/or time to construct than in Simplified, Anniversary or Pre-anniversary. It is up to you whether this acceptable or whether you need to use a system that takes more time to learn. And I think many people will love Notehand just fine. It is much, much better than continuing to write school notes, on job notes, and everyday lists, journals, etc. in longhand, that's for sure.

To give you an idea of the differences between Notehand and other systems, here are the number of brief forms for Gregg systems:

Anniversary: 318
Simplified: 181
Notehand: 47
Diamond Jubilee: 129
Series 90: ~118
Centennial: 139

So Notehand isn't as quite a leap as most of the others. Perfect for students and those who don't need lightening speed, just a increase in note-taking content. Perfect and as expected

Bringing back the lessons from high school to make note taking on the job easier. It's a used book in GREAT shape. No problems with it at all. No funky smells, no mold, no writing other than library tags as expected, no damaged pages.

Ponderous, detailed, somewhat obscure

Throughout history there are characters who aren't at the center of the stage, but who are important supporting players in the world's affairs. Gideon Welles was one of these: he served as Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy during all of the Civil War, and oversaw the expansion of that service from a tiny pre-war, almost exclusively sail-driven fleet into a large, steam-driven armada, sufficient to defeat Confederate ironclads, hunt down commerce raiders, and blockade all of the South. It was a monumental task, and Welles proved equal to it after a shaky start.

Who was this man, how did he come to prominence, and why did Lincoln appoint him to the post? Those are the questions that the author, John Niven, attempts to answer. Welles was primarily a newspaperman, though he did work in various government posts also, including one stint in the Department of the Navy during the Mexican-American War. However, he'd essentially been elected to no offices prior to being appointed Navy Secretary, and he'd only held that one appointment in the Navy Department prior to the appointment.

He did have one singular qualification from Lincoln's point of view, though. He was pretty much a founding member of the Republican Party, having broken with the Democrats over various issues relating to slavery. This gave him entree into Lincoln's circle of advisers and friends, and when Welles entered, he impressed people, and was on the list to be appointed to a cabinet post as a result.

I generally enjoyed this book, within limits. The author is a historian, a specialist in mid-19th Century political history, and it shows. Unfortunately, though the book is reasonably well-written, the author doesn't do much for context. So Andrew Jackson appears, for instance, without an introduction, and Welles at various times either belongs to or opposes political groups called "Loco-Focos", "Barnburners", and "Hunkers". The author never bothers to really explain any of that, so you're expected to know what a Loco-Foco was, on your own.

Those misgivings aside, this is *the* biography of Welles, and it belongs in the library of anyone interested in the Lincoln administration and the era.

"Father Neptune" brought to life

It was 34 years ago I first picked up this book and have been a fan of John Niven ever since. This book is the best in the distinguished list of Dr. Niven;s writings. Gideon Welles moves from editor to politician to powerful figure in the Lincoln administration and we follow him as fellow travelers on this voyage. This is one book well worth the price for your library.

Excellent, Readable Biography of Lincoln's Navy Secretary

John Niven sheds some light on Gideon Welles, the 19th century politician best known for his service as Abraham Lincoln’s Navy secretary. But Welles was far more than that as this book illustrates. A leading Jacksonian editor based out of Connecticut, Welles was always a competent and respected member of Lincoln’s Cabinet who also served as a close adviser to Andrew Johnson as well. Welles also helped launch the GOP. Niven sheds some light on this obscure figure and his role as a Jacksonian Democrat who opposed slavery, often clashing with “doughface” Isaac Toucey (who served in Polk’s and Buchanan’s Cabinets and really needs a biography) over the party’s direction in Connecticut. Besides offering a good account of his leading the Navy during the war, Niven is also able to shed some light on Welles’ personal life and his various writings before and after the war, including his efforts to show Lincoln as a strong figure. The book is helped by a good use of primary sources, including Welles’ diaries. This is one of the best biographies of a 19th century American politician offering new insights in a readable fashion. Highly recommended.

Love me some mature couples romance!

I finished this book right before going to bed. I might or might not had a dream featuring Durante...oh my.

No time for a long review, but will leave you with some random thoughts: I loved that, again, Billy proved that mature couples (she's pushing 40 and he's mid-40) make great romance reads! Loved Ella and Durante! She was nutty, and he the calm to her crazy. I liked that the personalities of the characters were captured in the tone and cadance of the narrative.

And Durante: that name is so on point!

On the side characters: I like how in Billy's books her protagonists are not operating in a bubble. The interaction with the side characters is very intense and crucial to the story development. The new introduced characters in this story, cheeky son Rufus and disturbed Arlo who got to redeem himself after his misguided actions in a A Life Sublime (Italian Knights series Book 5) by Billy London, were a blast. That sister Angela though, such a b*tch.

On the maffia drama: very undercooled written, no exaggerations. Things happened because they needed to happen and I totally bought it.

On Lucca: I've been to Lucca and this book was a great revisit. Well done, Billy, for capturing the essence of Lucca.

(I'm extracting a star, because there were some edit issues. In spelling but also some abrupt turns in scenes that read like details were left off. And I needed full disclosure on Ella's past dealings before Rufus was born. I was unsatisfied with the minimal explanation given.)

I enjoy the Italian Knight series immensely. This book wasnt as humorous as the last 5 books, but it still a good read. I would have like to have known more about Ella's past, like how she managed to shoot and arrow and handle a powerful weapon. The gun battle, i would have liked to have Da Canavezes mafia help with Durante & Ella's battle.
It was good to see the Arlo has now become apart of the family and he treats Rufus like a real brother (unlike Enzo).

Before you decide to end the series Billy, I would like for Beppe & Mimi to have their own book. Its a lot of chemistry there. Also, Paul and Sofia needs a book too. I really want to know if she will have a kid(s) with Paul.

I loved the dynamic and chemistry between Durante and Ella

I was so excited to read this book. Durante made an appearance in “A life Sublime”. He was described as Nick and Paul’s hot uncle. I loved the dynamic and chemistry between Durante and Ella. This is a story of finding love when you have so much baggage and demons that will not allow you to lay them to rest. The supporting characters added to the story.

You are introduced to Ella, her son Rufus and her crazy family in London. I loved that Rufus was a miniature Ella, in his frankness. It’s like God’s cosmic joke on parents, giving you a child that is a carbon copy of you. The dynamic between Ella and her mother (Constance) and/or sister (Angela) was crazy. Rose (“Kissing the Canvas”) has nothing on Constance. We also get to see how resourceful and skilled Ella truly is….I feel like we buried the lead with this piece. Hopefully there will be novella providing some background on Ella’s past prior to the first marriage.

For fans of the IK series, this book was like a gift basket of stuff. This book takes place at the same time as “A life Sublime” and “The Claim”. This book allows you to see the dynamics between Durante and his family. You get a glimpse of who Massimo was in his prime. What it was like for his family to be related to someone rising in the criminal underworld. We get to attend Massimo and Belinda’s wedding in this book. The crazy antics between Nick, Gina, Paul and Sofia continue. The wedding toasts had me in tears laughing. Arlo’s story is continued beginning with Massimo shipping him to Italy. (Arlo needs his own story)

Ella and Durante have officially become my favorite couple in the IK series.

Well done Ms. London. You never disappoint.

Interesting Read!!

Was required to read this for a political science course. I found it to be interesting to read the writings of Karl Marx. Having heard of the manefesto before, I enjoyed finally being able to the thougjts that were developed during this time period. Not what you would call an exciting read, it is rather a short read. Has allowed me to better understand a variety of sociology lectures that I have taken.

Great Anthology on Women in The Movement

Until it went out of print, I assigned this book for years in my college course on the civil rights movement. Even though many new books on women in the Civil Rights and Black Power movements are now available, Cade's anthology is an excellent collection of contemporary documents covering issues such as the sexism of welfare, the role of women in the Revolution, and abortion and reproductive rights. Although some of the materials may seem "dated" to younger readers, these are authentic "back in the day" voices of Black women who were in the middle of the feminist and Black Power movements.

ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND MOST ENLIGHTENING COLLECTIONS

Toni Cade Bambara (1939-1995) was an American author, social activist, and college professor.

She writes in the Preface to this 1970 volume, "This then is a beginning---a collection of poems, stories, essays, formal, informal, reminiscent, that seem best to reflect the preoccupations of the contemporary Black woman in this country. Some items were written especially for the collection. Some were discovered tucked away in notebooks. Many of the contributors are professional writers. Some have never before put pen to paper with publication in mind. Some are mothers. Others are students. Some are both. All are alive, are Black, are women. And that, I think, is credentials enough to address themselves to issues that seem to be relevant to the sisterhood."

Contributors include Nikki Giovanni; Audre Lorde; Alice Walker; Toni Cade herself, and many others. Topics include "Motherhood"; "Dear Black Man"; "Who Will Revere the Black Woman?"; "Double Jeopardy: To Be Black and Female"; "Is the Black Male Castrated?"; "The Black Social Workers' Dilemma"; "The Black Revolution in America," and more.

There is now an updated version of this book (The Black Woman: An Anthology.

I haven't finished this book but so far it is for surely a keeper the stories in here are just amazing, and to think the voices comes from northern writers, southern writers simply beautiful and strong and passionate awesome!!!
