A BOOK WITH SERIOUS QUALITY-CONTROL PROBLEMS
By David R. Eastwood
When I was twelve years old (more than five and a half decades ago), I joyfully read every one of the original Sherlock Holmes novels and stories by Conan Doyle. Since that time, I have reread about half of them and have read over two hundred Holmes parodies and pastiches written by others. At present, there are over a dozen anthologies of Holmes pastiches available, and I am sorry to report that SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE GAME'S AFOOT, edited by David Stuart Davies, is one of the most disappointing of these (two of its stories receiving a letter grade of "A" from me, four getting a "B," six a "C," another six a "D," and two earning a solid "F").

While a parody tries to amuse readers with humorous mockery and succeeds by being deliberately excessive or deliberately defective in one or more of its elements, a pastiche aims to please readers by replicating the chief effects of some enjoyable original work by closely mimicking all or most of its original elements. A successful Holmes pastiche typically must contain (1) an interesting and reasonably plausible problem or puzzle, which is solved in an interesting and reasonably plausible manner by Holmes, (2) characters that are interesting and plausible in the ways they speak and act, especially when they are the original ones invented and used by Conan Doyle, (3) a narrative style that closely approximates the vocabulary and sentence structures of Conan Doyle's stories, (4) settings that are historically and geographically accurate, and (5) an attention to details so that no errors of grammar, word usage, or fact exist that are not easily blamed on Doctor Watson's ineptness. As for the specific discussions that follow, I have avoided giving away any author's plot details or secrets (even stupid ones), and I have not attempted to mention all of the good or bad features of any of the stories.

Of the twenty pastiches in this anthology, only two struck me as very good: "The Long Man" by Rafe McGregor (which, atypically, is narrated by an outsider) and "Jerusalem Keep" by Mark Valentine and John Howard (which involves no crime but has a noble and heartwarming conclusion). Four other pastiches deserved to be rated as good, having few shortcomings with respect to the criteria listed above: "The Adventure of the Green Skull" by Mark Valentine (which deals touchingly with an industrial disease), "The Tragedy of Saxon's Gate" by Matthew Booth (which has a good puzzle with reasonable clues), "The Adventure of the Haunted Showman" by Christopher Sequeira (clever, despite a couple of careless errors involving characters' names), and "Sherlock Holmes and the Reichenbach Secret" by David Stuart Davies, the book's editor (which lacks a puzzle but skillfully adds a new twist to Holmes's life story and image).

Six other pastiches seemed to be just "so-so" for various reasons: "The Adventure of the Forgetful Assassin" and "The Adventure of the Hanging Tyrant" by M. J. Elliott (the latter verges sometimes on parody and contains the error that Freud was born in Germany rather than Austria), "The Adventure of the Brown Box" and "The North Walk Mystery" by Denis O. Smith (the former contains a good puzzle but a very poorly presented solution), "The Adventure of the Intermittent Jigsaw Puzzle" by Alan Stockwell (which seems to contain a few dashes of parody), and "The Return of the Sussex Vampire" by Christopher Sequeira (which includes many interesting ideas about Watson's later life). All of these have serious quality-control problems, and their good elements are undercut by weak or faulty ones.

Six more pastiches struck me as "poor," and two others seemed downright "terrible." The worst two were "The Adventure of the Richmond Horror" by Denis O. Smith and "The Adventure of the Christmas Bauble" by John Hall. Smith's story is full of plot holes and factual inaccuracies and is ludicrous on many levels, while Hall's is a silly piece with lame jokes, a solution pulled from the air, and a criminal who escapes. Barely better are "The Adventure of the Whitrow Inheritance" (which employs a plot gimmick previously used in Holmes pastiches by Edward D. Hoch and Stewart Kaminsky)* and "Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Christmas Past" (involving dubious Freudian analysis and a preposterously instantaneous cure) by David Stuart Davies, "The Case of the Gustafsson Stone" (which contains numerous errors and depends too heavily on luck for its resolution) and "The Case of the Vanishing Barque" by June Thomson (a lame and boring story that is resolved by an illegal trick on Holmes's part), "The Disappearance of the Cutter ALICIA" by John Hall (which is bland, almost dull, and depends on improbable luck for its solution), and "The Dragon of Lea Lane" by Michael Booth (which includes a dying man's words, which would help nobody identify his killer, and a solution that depends on a preposterous back-story that is researched privately by Holmes and concealed from Watson--and us--until nearly the ending).

Aside from the unevenness of the quality of the selections, there are traces of carelessness in the production of the book. Its table of contents will annoy most readers, because it lists stories' titles but not their authors (I penned all the authors' names into my own copy). The Introduction by Davies is intelligent and informative, but it states that brief biographies of the authors are at the back of the book, whereas they actually begin on the very next page. Finally, proofreading of the texts has been cursory: a few spelling errors occur, as well as a large number of punctuation errors, chiefly involving omitted quotation marks.

* POSTSCRIPT (Oct. 2010): After further thought & reading, it now seems to me that the plot gimmick in question was first invented by Anthony Wynne in "The Gold of Tso-fu" (1926) and then either borrowed or re-invented by Agatha Christie in "The Dream" (1937), where Poirot is brought in by two killers-to-be to serve as an expert witness to their bogus hocus-pocus. Others who used this plot gimmick for Holmes (or the wannabe Solar Pons) include August Derleth ("The Adventure of the Frightened Baronet," 1945), Ronald A. Knox ("The Adventure of the First-Class Carriage," 1947), Edward Hoch ("The Return of the Speckled Band," 1987), Stewart Kaminsky ("The Man from Capetown," 2001), and David Stuart Davies ("The Adventure of the Whitrow Inheritance" in this present book). In view of Agatha Christie's huge popularity, it seems very probable that at least 3 or 4 of these men "borrowed" this plot gimmick from her.

It's 1895 again.
By Philip K. Jones
This collection is described by the editor as "... a new batch of twenty adventures ... to fascinate and entertain you." The recent appearances of several assemblages of Sherlockian tales constructed around one theme or another have tended to jade the palates of Sherlockians for specialized sorts of mysteries. Without citing any particular example, I have noted, and reviewed, a number of specialized collections in recent times to the point that the appearance of a solid `clump' of Sherlockian entertainment is a welcome arrival. Unfortunately, the Publisher has not seen fit to include credits for earlier publications of many of the included items.

The tales published here for the first time include two well executed stories by Matthew Booth, "The Tragedy of Saxon's Gate" and "The Dragon of Lea Lane." One of three included by the editor, his "The Adventure of the Whitrow inheritance," introduces a particularly cheeky villain. A new effort by M. J. Elliot, "The Adventure of the Forgetful Assassin," describes a new and unique murder weapon. Rafe McGregor's "The Long Man" is a chilling echo of a real-life occurrence. Two new tales by Chrisopher Sequeira. "The Return of the Sussex Vampire" And "The Adventure of the Haunted Showman," both point up the effect of Watson's story telling on Holmes' practice. The single new entry of three by Denis O. Smith, "The Adventure of the Brown Box," is a classic Sherlockian tale. Two efforts by Mark Valentine complete the list of new tales, "The Adventure of the Green Skull" highlights one of the horrors of Nineteenth Century Industrialism and, "Jerusalem Keep," written with the help of John Howard, employs Sherlock Holmes, Antiquarian, as an expert witness in a unique court.

Old favorites reprinted here include a selection of hard-to-get items. Two by Davies, "Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Christmas Past," from The Strand, and "Sherlock Holmes and the Reichenbach Secret" from Sherlock magazine, have only been available in old magazines. Now Mr. Gulli, of The Strand, and Mr. Davies, of Sherlock, no doubt have copies available, but they are hard for the rest of us to find. M. J. Elliot's "The Adventure of the Hanging Tyrant" appeared in Curious Incidents II and John Hall's "The Adventure of the Christmas Bauble" was only to be found in another back issue of Sherlock Magazine. On the other hand, his "The Disappearance of the Cutter Alicia" appeared first in The Shoso-In Bulletin and was later reprinted in The Strand Magazine.

Denis O. Smith's "The North Walk Mystery" and "The Adventure of the Richmond Horror" both appeared in editions of Sherlock Magazine, but `North Walk' was also published in Volume 4 of Smith's Chronicles of Sherlock Holmes. Allen Stockwell's "The Adventure of the Intermittent Jig-Saw Puzzle" originally appeared in the second edition of his The Singular Adventures of Mr. Sherlock Holmes, but not in the first. In addition, there it was titled simply "The Intermittent Jig-Saw Puzzle." Both of June Thomson's tales, "The Case of the Vanishing Barque" and "The Case of the Gustafsson Stone," originally appeared in her The Secret Notebooks of Sherlock Holmes.

I believe we may conclude that the editor has succeeded in his goal

Better Off Flipping the Switch on Technology, by Eric Brende

What is the least we need to achieve the most? With this question in mind, MIT graduate Eric Brende flipped the switch on technology. He and his wife, Mary, ditched their car, electric stove, refrigerator, running water, and everything else motorized or "hooked to the grid," and spent eighteen months living in a remote community so primitive in its technology that even the Amish consider it antiquated.

Better Off is the story of their real-life experiment to see whether our cell phones, wide-screen TVs, and SUVs have made life easier -- or whether life would be preferable without them. This smart, funny, and enlightening book mingles scientific analysis with the human story to demonstrate how a world free of technological excess can shrink stress -- and waistlines -- and expand happiness, health, and leisure.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

How else would one know?
By ideas equate
Educated young author and matching wife take a lengthy stay in a community without electricity. They participated, and stuck with it, long enough to bring us a story. Without their commitment to observe and to tell, how else would we know about the bright and awkward sides of human behavior within our society under those terms? We already could guess at the amount of toil even with immense amounts of inventiveness and experience inside the group. What one might not figure would be that they successfully set their sights on growth and expansion, and are well insured in their own way.

A frustrating and unsatisfying read
By Kindle Customer
Are we better off -- socially and ecologically -- if we unplug ourselves and our lifestyles from electricity, gas, and other such utilities? This is Eric Brende's question, which he asks rather eloquently but never really answers.

For one thing, the "minimite" life seems like a nightmare for Eric's wife. She is the one hauling water from the pump to wash the laundry by hand. She is the one preparing, cooking, and keeping the food after a traumatic crash course in doing without refrigeration. She is, to wit, the hardest working person in the Brende household, and her plight portrays "minimite" life as neo-Stepford. Eric the Thoreau-like philosopher, often lost in his own thoughts, does not do nearly enough to acknowledge or explore the ramifications of this problem.

I was also disappointed in Brende's "conclusions," which failed to answer the central question of the book to my satisfaction. The story of his experiment draws to a close because his wife finds out she's allergic to horses, not because he's formulated a viable alternative to the plugged-in lifestyle he'll have to live the real world. So what was the point? Perhaps the Brendes' lives were changed forever, and maybe for the better. But I wasn't looking to read a memoir. I wanted hints and advice about where to begin transforming my own grid-dependent lifestyle.

By failing to ponder, explore, or present alternatives, Brende implies that the only viable solution is for all of us - for each of us - to move to farms of our own. Even if there were enough open acreage in America to sustain that kind of scenario (which there isn't), few people would adopt it. The vast majority of us - millions upon millions of us - need guidelines to help us change our lives where they exist right now.

Addressing the Geography of Nowhere
By Carmon Friedrich
The landscape of most American communities continues to transform into bland uniformity, with a proliferation of strip malls and box stores around which hives of ticky-tacky suburban neighborhoods abound. The neighborhoods are strangely quiet during most weekdays, as their inhabitants are busy elsewhere, braving daily freeway commutes to their jobs, where they toil to pay the mortgages on the homes they seldom see. Even when they do have leisure time to spend at home, many leave again to congregate with strangers in shopping malls, movie theaters, and restaurants, as well as pursuing other forms of entertaining distraction. Many see this as progress and proclaim it is very good.

Yet there have always been those who have questioned whether or not the prevailing form of "civilization" is as good as prevailing opinion proclaims. These folks are usually written off by those who blithely accept the status quo, with pejoratives used to marginalize their qualms: "kooks," "culturally irrelevant," and "disestablishmentarian" are a few of the names bandied about. Yet the counter-cultural fringe doesn't go away, and their questions are resonating with more and more people who are noticing the landscape and don't like what they see.

The questions vary, but most boil down to this: when we accept the status quo are we accepting the destruction of what Russell Kirk called "the Permanent Things"?

Asking and doing are two different things, however. Eric Brende is a man who asks a lot of questions, but he and his wife Mary also decided to do something to find answers. Brende details their quest in the book Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology (HarperCollins, 2004).

I imagine that Eric Brende was one of those toddlers who drove his mother crazy asking, "Why?" about everything. He admits that by his adolescent years he had "cultural indigestion," though he had immersed himself in television, science fiction, and music as a boy, and later even held a job at McDonald's trying to earn money for a car. But with what would become typical of his cost-benefit style of analysis, he decided that a bicycle would make more sense. He developed a habit of questioning the benefits of technology, making a distinction between tools and automatic machines. He says,

Everyone tended to treat them alike, as neutral agents of human intention. But machines clearly were not neutral or inert objects. They were complex fuel-consuming entities with certain definite proclivities and needs. Besides often depriving their users of skills and physical exercise, they created new and artificial demands--for fuel, space, money, and time. These in turn crowded out other important human pursuits, like involvement in family and community, or even the process of thinking itself. The very act of accepting the machine was becoming automatic. As a graduate student at that bastion of progress, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brende even had the temerity to write a paper defending the Luddites.

Those whose idea of getting back to nature is using their own espresso maker with organic coffee beans rather than patronizing Starbucks probably think that the Amish people represent the extreme end of technological repudiation. That would be false. Eric and Mary Brende actually discovered an Anabaptist community in rural Missouri that thinks the Amish are liberals who have run off the rails. This group lives without electricity and survives mostly by subsistence farming. In 1996, the Brendes finagled an invite to live with them for 18 months to test what had up till then just been Eric's theory: that scaling back technology would give more leisure time, not less.

In order to protect their identity and location, Brende calls the people he and his new wife lived with the "Minimites." They rented a cottage and some land from a Minimite family, the Millers, who became not only next-door neighbors, but friends who exemplified the proverb, "A friend in need is a friend in deed." The Brendes quickly found that if you don't depend on technology, then you had better learn to depend on others, as well as be willing to lend a hand yourself, when necessary.

Despite being cautiously enthralled with the idea of going off the grid and raising his own food, the Roman Catholic, Yale University graduate Brende had some tentative stereotypes about the bearded men and the women in their modest frocks and pleated caps. The Minimites also reserved opinion concerning the outsiders before relaxing their reserve. But after spending time with one another, mostly in work-related activities such as canning, hoeing, threshing, and barn raising, the walls lowered and the relationships warmed.

There was this phrase they kept repeating: "Many hands make work light." The statement was true, though hard to explain. Gradually, as you applied yourself to your task, the threads of friendship and conversation would grow and connect you to laborers around you. Then everything suddenly became inverted. You'd forget you were working and get caught up in the camaraderie, the sense of lightened effort. This surely must rank among the greatest of labor-saving secrets. Work folded into fun and disappeared. Friendship, conversation, exercise, fresh air, all melded together into a single act of mutual self-forgetting.

Brende tells of his surprise as the men who seemed so alike in their dour exteriors eventually distinguished themselves through their different personality quirks. Some had been part of similar communities all their lives, but many had, like the Brendes, come from the modern world and radically changed their lifestyles, often for the sake of their children. There was Edward, the ex-Vietnam veteran who liked to tell jokes then apologized for it; he and his wife would sometimes spar in front of others. There was Cornelius, the reclusive elderly schoolteacher who felt the Minimites were too materialistic and who lived like a hermit on the fringes of this fringe group. There was Harvey, Mr. Miller's oldest son, who could be both crude and jolly as he enjoyed his gargantuan meals, but who knew how to handle an axe and preferred it over a chain saw because "when I stop, it stops too."

In the cost-benefit scheme of things, Brende was constantly evaluating the success of his experiment. When they first arrived in the reclusive community, the Brendes were enchanted with many aspects of their new life, including the neat little home with its tidy yard and garden, the flush of success when the first vegetables began to grow, the physical benefits of hard work and the consonant ability to truly enjoy one's leisure. But weeds inevitably grow, and "weeds in particular must be hoed on time, whether you have the will to hoe or not." Lack of refrigeration and planning made the lack of variety in meals become onerous, for a time. It quickly became a burden to carry all their water from a spring, and attempts to construct a ram to bring water to the house only resulted in running from some cows, but no running water. And working in extreme heat and extreme cold could be downright uncomfortable.

Less is usually more is the conclusion Brende draws. After passing out from heatstroke at a threshing party, at first he wondered if his entire premise about technology had been a fantasy. "[The threshing] appeared to be a form of naked physical toil that only a glutton for punishment would willingly engage in. Was there a need for more machinery here?" But after he realized that the other workers had survived the first threshing of the season unscathed, he remembered that he had just returned from a trip with his wife in an air-conditioned car where they had been in air-conditioned buildings. His body was not yet acclimatized to the heat, thanks to technology.

Brende also notes that reducing their dependence on technology had the benefit of heightening their sensory perceptions as well as their enjoyment of everyday activities. When their garden finally began producing and Mary finally began consulting cookbooks and learning the craft of cooking--"The domestic dungeon burst its bonds, and Mary the artiste stepped forth"--they discovered the joy of tasting real, fresh food. Long evenings were spent reading, as well as just listening to the ebb and flow of the sounds outside, or watching fireflies cavort about the ceiling. Kerosene lamps provided illumination at night without eliminating the natural light from the stars (though Minimites kept flashlights for emergencies). Life was lived according to the natural cycles of daylight and nighttime, and while work was physically demanding, it was limited by these natural boundaries. The down-side was occasional moodiness induced by long winter days without much light, but the inevitable return of spring was that much sweeter.

Many have heard of the Gilbreth family in the story Cheaper by the Dozen. The famous family with 12 children was portrayed first in a book, then some 1950s movies (then in a couple of recent and forgettable remakes of the original movies). In the real-life clan, the parents were both "efficiency experts," applying their time-saving methods to their large brood, often with amusing results, such as when the children regaled their new principal with an explanation of how their father taught them to bathe. Efficiency in the early twentieth-century was big business, and Eric Brende notes the contributions of Frederick Taylor who was known as the father of "scientific management."

Wielding a stopwatch, he would measure the time it took a worker to perform a given task, such as shoveling dirt. Then he would analyze the task, breaking it down into segments, eliminating any unnecessary motions and replacing them with more efficient ones. The task was now standardized. Using Taylor's findings, a manager could instruct an employee how to shovel dirt in one perfect, unvarying pattern, as if he were a robot, and reprimand him if he deviated to the slightest degree. Taylorism thence became one of the most slavish forms of technological servility, parodied by Charlie Chaplin in the movie Modern Times.

Yet what seems like a good idea may have unintended consequences, Brende believes. More stuff requires more maintenance, and more time working to keep up with the Joneses who have more stuff than you. Comparing the height of threshing season (lasting two to four weeks), when the full day's workload resulted in just over nine hours of actual labor, to the year-round burden of a typical partner in a New York law firm who works 60-80 billable hours, Brende decided that his yoke was easy and his burden light, especially when he considered the long breaks in the off season.

While criticizing modern notions of efficiency, however, Brende noticed that one kind of division of labor made a lot of sense, though to say so offends modern notions of egalitarianism: dividing the work of men and women. From the start, the Brendes fell into the pattern of Eric doing the heavy outside chores and Mary taking care of the house, with some overlap when it came to gardening, canning, and occasionally cooking, though Mary had been employed in Boston before their radical move from the city. The book tells about the home birth of the Brende's baby Hans; the midwife reluctantly accepted the hundred dollars they offered her. They took a weekend trip to have the baby baptized and to visit friends, and Eric decided to attend a college lecture about the social relations of the Amish. It turned out to be a feminist diatribe against their "patriarchal" system, critical of the delineation of men's and women's tasks. Brende, after living with "Amish" people for so long, couldn't sit still for that. While he didn't defend patriarchy, he did point out that "...never was there a society in which female, or womanly, values so dominated? Nurturing the land and the crops, deferring to the wishes of others, not having to get ones own way? And because they live on farms, women make an important economic contribution to the home, well recognized by the community."

The occasional foray back into the industrial world didn't keep the Brendes from being tempted to remain in the Minimite community. But they eventually decided that they had learned what they set out to discover: how much or how little technology was really necessary for "human comfort and leisure," and they wanted to see how that could be worked out in the outside world. They found that life without technology is not the romantic utopia that some would like to imagine--it's hard work. They also found that such a life is impossible without community, and not many have the same ideals. Like a true idealist, though, Brende says, "What we saw in it can be transported; principles are lightweight and easily carried about." The Brendes carried them to an older neighborhood in Saint Louis where they now live with their children.

Islam in the World Today: A Handbook of Politics, Religion, Culture, and SocietyFrom Brand: Cornell Univ. Press

Considered the most authoritative single-volume reference work on Islam in the contemporary world, the German-language Der Islam in der Gegenwart, currently in its fifth edition, offers a wealth of authoritative information on the religious, political, social, and cultural life of Islamic nations and of Islamic immigrant communities elsewhere. Now, Cornell University Press is making this invaluable resource accessible to English-language readers.

More current than the latest German edition on which it is based, Islam in the World Today covers a comprehensive array of topics in concise essays by some of the world's leading experts on Islam, including:

• the history of Islam from the earliest years through the twentieth century, with particular attention to Sunni and Shi'i Islam and Islamic revival movements during the last three centuries;

• data on the advance of Islam along with current population statistics;

• Muslim ideas on modern economics, on social order, and on attempts to modernize Islamic law (shari'a) and apply it in contemporary Muslim societies;

• Islam in diaspora, especially the situation in Europe and America;

• secularism, democracy, and human rights; and

• women in Islam Twenty-four essays are each devoted to a specific Muslim country or a country with significant Muslim minorities, spanning Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union.

Additional essays illuminate Islamic culture, exploring local traditions; the languages and dialects of Muslim peoples; and art, architecture, and literature. Detailed bibliographies and indexes ensure the book's usefulness as a reference work.

Review

"This book is the most comprehensive work on contemporary Islam available worldwide, replacing almost an entire Islamic library. Being the translation into English of a German handbook, its original had already seen five editions by 2005―remarkable because German Orientalists had usually focused on historical and philological aspects of Islam. The volume takes account not only of religious/theological developments in the Islamic world but even more strongly of social, social, economic, and political events there."―Murad Wilfried Hofmann, The Muslim World Book Review (2012)

"A new and updated version of the classic Der Islam in der Gegenwart, now in its fifth edition, this first English-language translation gives non-German speakers access to one of the most authoritative works on Islam in the modern world. Editors Ende and Steinbach are distinguished professors of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies in Germany, and the 40-plus contributors come from equally distinguished academic backgrounds. The volume is divided into three parts; the first is a historical overview of the Islamic world from its beginnings in the seventh century to the present, including a description of the different sects and movements of Islam and their influence in the world today. The second, and most extensive, section discusses the political role of Islam in the modern world, Islamic economics, social systems, and law. Each of 24 essays covers a Muslim country, or a country with a significant Muslim population, in depth; communities in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe are included. The final section describes Islamic culture and civilization, including art, literature, and architecture, and their intersection with the West. Multiple indexes aid the reader in finding topics, and a massive bibliography is included. The volume has few pictures and is very text dense, but the language is engaging and the translation is excellent. An impressive reference at a bargain price; essential for all public and academic libraries."―Library Journal, 15 July 2010

"The editors of the superb Islam in the World Today promise a 'handbook' on modern Islam and its peoples. What they have delivered is arguably the best single source on the world of Islam and its history and its modern condition. An indispensable guide navigated by two accomplished editors, and a group of outstanding contributors, it is a rich repository of knowledge about the doctrines and practice of Islam and its diversity and global spread."―Fouad Ajami, The Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, and Stanford University, author of The Foreigner's Gift: The Americans, the Arabs and the Iraqis in Iraq

"Islam in the World Today offers a comprehensive and accessible point of departure for understanding the religion, culture, history, and politics of the Muslim majority world past and present. This admirable handbook―for over twenty-five years a standard in German―is now available in English. Reliably authoritative, it is also a very good read."―Dale F. Eickelman, Ralph and Richard Lazarus Professor of Anthropology and Human Relations, Dartmouth College

"Islam in the World Today is without doubt the most comprehensive work available on contemporary Islam and all phenomena connected with the organization of Islamic societies today. The original German edition has proved tremendously useful as a textbook and is simply the book of reference on this subject for learned speakers of German, be they academics or members of the public who work in journalism, diplomacy, or in international aid organizations. By now it has introduced a whole generation of scholars who read German into the study of contemporary Islam―among them this author. This new English-language edition will certainly be picked up as a textbook and as a work of reference in advanced college courses and in graduate courses on Islam, the Middle East, political science, and other adjacent fields."―Frank Griffel, Yale University

Step-by-Step guide is very helpful
By Scott
A really nice book for Android developers. You do need some existing knowledge of SDK programming going into this book.

The main reason this was so helpful to me is that it's so current. I'd been using forums to try to learn this for a while. I scrounged around picking up tidbits of information. This is obviously much more efficient.

I like that it takes you through developing an app step-by-step. While you're obviously not just going to build an app out of thin air as you read the book, it is very helpful to refer to. That step-by-step guide is the main reason this is getting five stars.

Patent Fundamentals for Scientists and Engineers, Third Edition, by Thomas T. Gordon, Arthur S. Cookfair, Vincent G. LoTempio, Brendan S.

The most significant overhaul of the U.S. patent laws in decades occurred with the recent passage of the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act (AIA). Understanding the law that dictates what a patent is and how a patent is obtained and enforced, and the recent changes through statute or case law litigation presents unique challenges. This third edition of Patent Fundamentals for Scientists and Engineers examines the new Act and provides an overview of the patent system for the independent inventor as well as for members of the scientific and business community―whether a scientist, engineer, supervisor, or manager.

In addition to a new chapter dedicated to the America Invents Act, the third edition includes annotations of the recent law changes, updates in all chapters, new figures, and new case studies. The authors discuss patent filing outside of the United States and also dedicate a chapter specifically to the Canadian patent system. They describe the key topics that anyone involved in the patent process needs to know, including what makes an invention patentable, the art of patent searching, and the crucial role of record keeping. The text also includes an indispensable glossary of patent terminology, as well as an appendix with sample U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) forms.

This book provides a valuable guide to assist inventors in dealing with the USPTO, as well as with patent professionals. The text describes the patent process from conception to application filing and is a must-have reference for scientists and businesspeople alike. Since the role of patent professionals is to obtain the maximum protection for inventors, both the inventor and businessperson would be well advised to understand and participate in all the steps involved. This book offers an excellent insight into the patent process.
