Interesting Reading
By Esther K. Freeman
It is very interesting reading especially for someone who lived through these incidents. I am most interested in those situations discussed behind closed doors.

Disappointed!
By F. Sackey
Almost everything in this book has been rumored or discussed in every Liberian beer-drinking joint. Nothing new; therefore, to claim that the book is fictional only show the fear of the writer in claiming what every Liberian of age 45+ has heard. Incidentally, there is another book written by a Liberian from the suburbs of Charlotte, NC, claiming to be fictional that follows the same plot. If this author, John Milton Greaves, is actually THE Milt Greaves of the 1970s, then there is even more disappointment. I could gather a group of "drunk" Liberians, document their rumors and innuendos and come up with a similar book.
NOT WORTH THE COST.

This Is Not a Novel!
By Russell Traughber
Mr. Greaves would have better served in his anti-Sirleaf campaign, if he had written a straight political account of his beliefs and left out gross parts. His delivery was very ill advised. He is quick in pointing out others' failings, except is own, I suspect. This makes his work a, very, poorly veiled memoir.

I'm not defending President Sirleaf. I am an outsider living in the comfort of the USA, however, no person deserves to have her character assassinated like this. Mr. Greaves is not a novelist. He seems very angry and vengeful. This a political smear. What the author asserts in the book may or may not be true. But what is obvious, again to the outsider, is that the book was written out of spite and directed towards the current Liberian President Ellen Sirleaf. Plus, it is grossly over priced and poorly edited and written.

I subscribe to the Liberian, Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Nigerian daily news feeds from the AllAfricia online newspaper. Greaves's book, again it is NOT a work of fiction, is meant to inflame, not as fair criticism of the history of Liberia and her sad troubles. This is why I object so vehemently to The Fist of Machiavelli. Now the unemployed and/or the uneducated masses in Liberia might find a champion in Greaves's book, and this is very unfortunate.

Stephen Ellis's book that was first published in 1999 by the New York University Press, The Mask of Anarchy: The Destruction of Liberia and the Religious Dimension of an African Civil War, is a scholarly account of the horrible civil war days. His book was republished in 2006, just at the beginning of President Sirleaf coming to office. Now this book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Liberia. Greaves's book is meant to inflame, not as fair criticism of the history of Liberia and her sad troubles.

Optimal Control Theory: An Introduction (Dover Books on Electrical Engineering), by Donald E. Kirk

Optimal control theory is the science of maximizing the returns from and minimizing the costs of the operation of physical, social, and economic processes. Geared toward upper-level undergraduates, this text introduces three aspects of optimal control theory: dynamic programming, Pontryagin's minimum principle, and numerical techniques for trajectory optimization.
Chapters 1 and 2 focus on describing systems and evaluating their performances. Chapter 3 deals with dynamic programming. The calculus of variations and Pontryagin's minimum principle are the subjects of chapters 4 and 5, and chapter 6 examines iterative numerical techniques for finding optimal controls and trajectories. Numerous problems, intended to introduce additional topics as well as to illustrate basic concepts, appear throughout the text.

Classic that never goes out of style
By Justin
My professor chose this book to use in an Optimal Control class partly because it is very affordable. On top of that, its contents are superb, giving very clear explanations of the fundamental principles underlying Optimal Control for nonlinear/linear systems.

Despite its long history, I would think that all material are still relevant, although there are available more "modern" numerical techniques (nonetheless, it's still always good to know how things were done "back in those days"). I would grade this as a must-have for the beginning student in Optimal Control. I have always been a fan of Dover books, publishing quality books at rock bottom prices. This one has just reinforced my liking of Dover Publishing.

Practical Excellent Introduction
By Pushkin Kachroo
It is an excellent "first book" which is very easy to read and covers broad range of topics: Dynamic Programming leading to Hamilton-Jacobi using Bellman's principle, Calculus of Variations, Hamiltonian Equations, Pontryagin's principle and finally numerical solutions (two point boundary value problems based and using direct methods from operations research methods).

Student's review
By Peter, graduate student
I used this book for graduate course about Optimal control. It is written in very good style, friendly for everyone who is new to the topic. Optimal control theory seems very difficult in the first view, but this book can help doing the first steps.
The book starts with explaining why optimal control theory is important. Then it builds static optimizing theory. After these simpler parts are clearly explained, the calculus of variations and the dynamic optimization is introduced. The last part is numerical techniques for finding optimal control.
In my opinion this book explains, for example, the deriving of Riccati equation in the best way I have ever read. I can say that I finally understand where Riccati equation comes from. :)
Every section of the book is supported with several examples that help understanding the theory.
I recommend this book for everyone who wants to understand the optimal control theory fundamentals. It is especially suitable for those who are new to the topic.

“Spicy, fast, and enthralling . . . a breathless read.”
–Julia London, author of The Perils of Pursuing a Prince

About the Author
Monica McCarty’s interest in the Scottish clan system began in the most unlikely of places: a comparative legal history course at Stanford Law School. After a short but enjoyable stint practicing law, she realized that her legal vocation and her husband’s transitory career as a professional baseball player were not exactly a match made in heaven. So she traded in her legal briefs for Scottish historical romances with sexy alpha heroes. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their two young children. If You Liked the First Book, You'll Be Disappointed
By Baazumi
Having thoroughly enjoyed "Highlander Untamed", I was eager to begin "Highlander Unmasked" and for the first chapter I was delighted. However, as the story progressed or should I say as the subjective thoughts of the characters progressed, I could barely get through the book. I found myself skipping page after page filled with nothing more than the Alex's and Meg's personal musings about how they felt about themselves and each other. This type of non-dialog between the characters made up the bulk of the book. What a disappointment after reading the first book! What made "Highlander Untamed" so good is the story was the focus of the book and the subjective thoughts and feelings of the characters were well balanced within the story. Not so with "Highlander Unmasked" - this book was burdened down with redundancy, restating the same thoughts and feelings over and over and OVER again, the same trap most, but not all, (never Julie Garwood) romance writers seem to fall into. This constant restating of personal subjectivity seems to be a cop out on writing the STORY. What a shame, this book showed such promise. Had the story focused more on Alex and less on Meg, it would have worked much better and grounded the story; it was after all called "Highlander Unmasked". Although in the beginning Alex was strong and manly, as the story unfolded Alex was basically dazed and confused most of the time, and the easy charismatic nature brought out in the first book was gone. Meg was nosy and pushy, with little discrimination and undermined Alex's efforts to the point he was more in danger from her meddling than from his enemies. In the first book, Rory and Isabelle were strong defined characters. You got a strong sense of Rory as a man and Isabelle faced her flaws and made conscious decisions to come up against herself and work through them. In this book, Alex and Meg are fragmented, whiny, and constantly conflicted characters for the most part, and there's way too much of Meg. What showed great promise disappointed greatly.

Enjoyable
By Carol A. Spradling
Meg MacKinnon has to marry in order to defend her clan's holdings. Faced with a deadline to achieve marital bliss, she heads to court in search of a husband. Alex MacLeod must keep his identity and purpose hidden. Too bad for him that Meg recognizes him as one of the men who aided her and her mother during a roadside attack.

Ms McCarty does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. Meg and Alex are both strong, very likable, but not over powering.

I did feel there were times when the story bogged down with details and I rolled my eyes at a few phrases. But, the author did stay focused on the plot and kept the action moving.

This is my first read of this author and I have already scribbled a note to myself listing the title of her next book to go in my tbr pile.

For Love or Duty...........an agonizing & sizzling sequel
By Misuzmama
Never has a man held such a burden. In Alex MacLeod's mission hangs the fate of his Highland people, a way of life. He must do everything in his power to prevent the King's plan to colonize the Highlands with Lowlanders. In Edinburgh, Alex uses his cunning, stealth and charm to disguise where his loyalties lie. The King's men, not knowing of the serpent lying in their midst, reveal the details of their mission. Only a beguiling woman stands in his way. A woman who awakens a need in him he never new existed with the power to devastate his mind, body, soul and the fate of his people.

Never has a woman held such a burden. Meg MacKinnon holds the fate of her clan in her hands. With an ailing father, she needs to find a trustworthy and loyal husband who will support her simple brother as chief. The Edinburgh court holds her answer, that is until she attacked on her journey there. Amidst the horror of the battle she is saved by a mysterious highlander, whose visage -days later- she cannot forget. An encounter at court with the brother of a neighboring clan chief raises her suspicions. A man with honor, strength and loyalty? Although she may wish it, he is not a man for her. A mercenary is not the man to support her brother and help lead her people. How could a man who displays sweet tenderness and love be loyal to no one? Meg has her doubts and will stop at nothing until her highlander is unmasked.

I love these types of books. A book where the hero has to make a life altering decision -his people vs his woman. *Sniff* Lots of roller coaster of emotions here. *semi spoiler* Just as he realizes that he loves her, he must be cruel and push her away in the worst way possible. His duty to his people comes before his heart. This comes just as heroine finally realizes that she has found true love. Not just a another duty that she humbly has accepted for all these years. The devastation is immediate. The reader is sucked into a whirlwind of emotion. Rooting for the highland people and for the love of the H/H -seemingly impossible.

So if you like highlander tales (seriously, who doesn't like those sexy Scots? ;))with a bit of bittersweet and tender emotion added to the mix then you love this one. A deluge of historical detail, which I found fascinating. Great characterizations and an action filled plot that has several swoon worthy scenes. This can be read as a stand alone book. The prequel 'Highlander Untamed' is good (****), but I found this one even better.

Different Games, Different Rules: Why Americans and Japanese Misunderstand Each Other, by Haru Yamada

Japan and the United States are in closer contact politically and economically than ever before, yet in many ways our nations are as far from mutual understanding as ever. Misconceptions and miscommunications between East and West continue to plague this important relationship, frustrating the best efforts of both cultures to work together. Stereotypes abound: Americans see Japanese as evasive and inscrutable, while Japanese see Americans as pushy and selfish. What causes these persistent misunderstandings, and what can be done to avoid them?
Fluent in both languages and at home in both cultures, Haru Yamada brings an insiders perspective and a linguists training to this difficult question, illuminating the many reasons why Americans and Japanese misunderstand one another. Social organization, she explains, shapes the way we talk. Because American and Japanese cultures value different kinds of social relationships, they play different language games with different sets of rules. In America, for instance, Aesop's fable about the grasshopper and the ants ends with the ants scorning the foolhardy grasshopper. In Japan, however, the story has a very different ending: the ants invite the grasshopper in to share their winter meal, as they appreciate how his singing spurred them on during their summer labors. In the difference between these two endings, argues Yamada, lies an important lesson: Americans, because of their unique political history, value independence and individuality, while Japanese value mutual dependency and interconnectedness. The language of both cultures is designed to display and reinforce these values so that words, phrases and expressions in one language can have completely different connotations in another, leading to all manner of misunderstanding. Yamada provides numerous examples. In Japan, for instance, silence is valued and halting speech is considered more honest and thoughtful than fluid speech, while in America forthright, polished speech is valued. Likewise, the Japanese use word order to express emphasis, while Americans use vocal stress: a listener unaware of this difference may easily misunderstand the import of a sentence. In a lucid and insightful discussion, Yamada outlines the basic differences between Japanese and American English and analyzes a number of real-life business and social interactions in which these differences led to miscommunication. By understanding how and why each culture speaks in the way that it does, Yamada shows, we can learn to avoid frustrating and damaging failures of communication.
Different Games, Different Rules is essential reading for anyone who travels to or communicates regularly with Japan, whether they are scientists, scholars, tourists, or business executives. But as Deborah Tannen notes in her Foreword to the book, even those who will never travel to Japan, do business with a Japanese company, or talk to a person from that part of the world, will find the insights of this book illuminating and helpful, because the greatest benefit that comes of understanding another culture is a better and deeper understanding of one's own.

Review

"For those who have enjoyed Deborah Tannen's books, such as You Just Don't Understand and Gender and Discourse, Yamada's book will provide an in-depth example of Tannen's style of discourse analysis. For the cross-cultural worker traveling in Japan, it is certainly a wealth of information." --SIL Electronic Book Reviews

"Different Games, Different Rules is an insightful analysis of why Japanese and Americans, despite the best of intentions, often misunderstand each other. In easy-to-understand prose and with clear examples, Dr. Haru Yamada illustrates the mutual assumptions, the unconscious strategies, as well as the different mechanics of the two languages that form the barriers to better communication. In showing us ways to improve communication with each other, she also provides a key to improved understanding ourselves. Informative and immediately useful for any person involved in Japanese-U.S. dealings."--Norio Ohga, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Sony Corporation

"Yamada makes clear the close connection between a country's culture and its language and how cultural differences can create misunderstanding and mistrust during negotiations between companies and countries. This insightful and very useful book should be required reading for government officials and corporate executives in both Japan and the United States."--Tatsuro Toyoda, former President, and current senior Advisor, Member of the Board, Toyota Motor Corporation

"Many others have offered analysis, opinion, and advice on this complex subject, but none have shed more light."--Walter G. Hoadley, Executive Vice President, Bank of America

"Dr. Yamada offers an engaging analysis of the differences between American and Japanese communication styles. Rich in insights on navigating the minefield of cross-cultural communication." --Y. Kobayashi, Chairman, Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd.

"It is marvelously well written. It is witty, engaging, academic, and at the same time, very personal." --Seiichi Makino, Journal of Japapnese Studies

From the Back Cover
Japan and the United States are in closer contact politically and economically than ever before, yet in many ways our nations are as far from mutual understanding as ever. Misconceptions and miscommunications between East and West continue to plague this important relationship, frustrating the best efforts of both cultures to work together. Stereotypes abound: Americans see Japanese as evasive and inscrutable, while Japanese see Americans as pushy and selfish. What causes these persistent misunderstandings, and what can be done to avoid them? Fluent in both languages and at home in both cultures, Haru Yamada brings an insider's perspective and a linguist's training to this difficult question, illuminating the many reasons why Americans and Japanese misunderstand one another. Social organization, she explains, shapes the way we talk. Because American and Japanese cultures value different kinds of social relationships, they play different language games with different sets of rules. The language of both cultures is designed to display and reinforce these values so that words, phrases, and expressions in one language can have completely different connotations in another, leading to all manner of misunderstanding. Essential reading. Clever comparisons and observations.
By Davey Jones
I was recommended this book by a professor and it has provided me with an interesting perspective to viewing Japanese business. I enjoyed her view on the American vs the Japanese mind-set in business via. an interesting analysis. I would recommend this book for the student in Japanese business studies, someone looking to bridge that pragmatic gap and truly communicate, for the Japanophile, and for the linguist studying Japanese or English for that matter. I almost gave this book 4 stars because I thought it became repetitive but, I'd realized that the analysis was actually well thought out and helped delimit certain Japanese and (American) English peculiarities. Many of which are quite helpful to understanding this area of social interaction in Japanese society. Especially recommended for study abroad students and Jets before departure, it's a good read for that long flight.

One of the few good "understanding the Japanese" books
By Dr.J.A.P.
My dissertation is on US-Japan relations, so I've had to read a lot of these types of books. Its a shame more of them aren't like this. Granted, its not perfect, but if you had time to read only one book on the Japanese before jumping on a plane to negotiate your company's deal, I would hope this might be one of the books on the Airport bookstore's shelf... which it probably isn't.

In a league with Gudykunst, Barnlund..
By Randall Pennington
As an intercultural communication researcher, I can safely say that Ms. Yamada's book is one of the true rarities in this field. She is truly bi-cultural as well as bi-lingual and this makes her insights into the intricacies of Japanese/American communication far more meaningful and astute. By all means buy this book!

BATBNY
By Nancy!
From the jump there was something about Apollo that I didn't like, usually I LOVE the male characters with cocky attitudes but he was one that I couldn't stand. The more I read that feeling just grew, I can't believe he changed how he did. I smiled seeing Kaylee & Ra were apart of this book. Sarahi was just ugh... I had mixed feelings about Shonjai, one minute I liked her & then the next I didn't because of what she allowed Zymir to do to her. I liked Avy, she's that type of friend that's always down to ride no matter what. Infinite was a stand up dude. I loved how even though Apollo was his mans he wasn't with the shxt he did. Now Neek, he was everything, glad he stepped in & made things right. What happened to Shonjai tho... I didn't like all the time changes & how there wasn't much going on musically.. Overall it was an okay read.

Must Read!!!
By Nicki Ervin
This was a really good book. I am so mad Apollo couldn't get it together, but then again he left room for the next man to come in and love his family like he couldn't and didn't want to. I felt so bad for the things that Jai went through dealing with him. They had an extensive past and he gave all that up. Infinite and Ayvie had a lovely relationship. They loved each other very much. Ayvie had her best friends back always and vice versa. I wasn't to shocked that Neek and Jai ended up having feelings. That was definitely a good man. She deserved happiness. I did cry a little towards the end though. Everything happens for a reason, but I didn't expect what happened to have actually happened!

Sex Matters, by Osho

Sex matters to us all. The Osho approach to sex begins with an understanding of how important love is in our lives, while at the same time acknowledges that the journey into love cannot exclude our innate biological energies. With this perspective, it becomes clear that the tendency for religions, and for society in general, to associate sex with sin and morality has been a great misfortune.

Sex Matters begins by deconstructing the layers of sexual repression that the condemnation of sex has inflicted on human. Throughout Sex Matters - in response to questions about everything from jealousy to premature ejaculation, the role of intimacy and the differences between men and women - Osho proposes a vision that embraces sex as a fundamental gift from nature. We learn how orgasm offers a glimpse of timelessness, thoughtlessness, and pure awareness -- biology's way of pointing toward the consciousness that helps us to understand ourselves.

Finally, we are presented with a clear choice: a repressed sexuality that leads to pornography, perversion, and a stunted humanity or a playful, respectful, and relaxed innocence that supports us in becoming fulfilled and whole, as nature intended.

An antidote to stagnant thinking....
By J. Al-hashimi
I was watching Oprah Winfrey the other day and she had this couple on and it was a man and a woman, married with children, but the guy was all dressed and made himself up to look like a woman so it looked like a pair of women. And they were going to stick it out, blah, blah... but in the two minutes I watched it the man who looked like a woman said: "Sex is between the legs and gender is in the head," which obviously was a rationalizing definition. Oprah nodded somberly, repeated the definition, and then she said, "I get it." My point here is that a lot of people say a lot of stupid things about sex and a lot of people go along with it.

The point is made throughout Osho's work that religion and culture is more to blame for violent sex and deviant attitudes about sex than pornographers by repression and shame. This book is about psychology and spirituality and the sexual experience. That is Osho's point; get rid of your conditioning; you have been conditioned by thousands of years of culture which has poisoned your perceptions. He also makes the point that love is rare, that most people don't love and they don't know they don't love.

He states that while most marriages are composed of ugliness, painted faces and everything dead inside, the point of marriage is a deep spiritual communion, a training ground for egolessness (149):"There are many things you can never develop alone. Even your own growth needs someone to respond-someone so intimate that you open yourself to him or her." Osho makes the point that a marriage which is a spiritual communion is vastly different than a marriage with simply a physical or psychological basis, that their offspring will be radically evolved humans, hopefully the future of mankind.

Well, Osho is all about the evolution of human potential and he may have something. He speaks of a future where people live religion and no longer talk about it, where the new man will not be a talker but will live life, a time of no longer "great men" but rather of a general lifting of the quality of humanity. He speaks a future where sex is nobody else's concern and is more like a game, a dance of two energies together, than a serious affair. Osho is remarkable, especially so when you consider that he was born in backwater India and died in 1990, he did an astounding job of identifying how to acheive consciousness and identifying evolutionary trends. His thesis is that the evolution of everything has to be for a reason, for refinement of humankind, a progression towards connection with their souls and producing less volume and higher quality human beings. Osho is anti-formal religion like Eckhart Tolle. This perspective is that religion is inside of us naturally and the external formalized dogmas and culture got it mostly wrong.

The goal is to detach from your ego, to let the ego wither and die from lack of attention. In order to do that, you must witness yourself, stand apart and know yourself and when you acheive the loss of your ego you will experience timelessness and superconsciousness. He says (132): "Sexuality is a simple biological phenomenon. It should not be given so much importance. Its only significance is that the energy can be transformed into higher planes; it can become more and more spiritual. And the way to make it more spiritual is to make it less serious."

The thrust of his argument is that sexual energy is the ONLY energy of life and we can use the sexual experience to open the gateway of our consciousness to our soul by meditation/being aware/witnessing/encountering the whole process during sex instead of just cycling the energy and acheiving nothing. He states that if you don't have sexual energy you don't have the energy to transform; lukewarm people have difficulty reaching enlightenment. Love (heart) will pull the energy upward. Meditation (head) will pull the love energy up. Osho cautions against doing dull things, being dull in conversation, but advocates full energy, passion as a way of life.

He challenges everything: don't fall in love (biological and invasive and blind), rise in love (spiritual and respectful and insightful). On page 206 he talkes about couples who have "risen in love" and their synchronicity, understanding without words, energies relating directly without words. Consciousness as the master, not biology; companions of each other, not masters of one another. He says to go on developing/discovering the love inside you because a loving heart will attract a loving heart.

He sees tantric sex as a way out of unconsciousness, along with meditation during your everyday life. But Osho's point is that the sexual experience is so charged with energy and potential consciousness that it is unique and can bring you to egolessness and timelessness. Ultimately, Osho states that sexual energy will turn away from physical sex and that bio-electrical energy will convert to great love and great compassion.

Osho makes the point that even medicine has gotten into the culture on the subject informing people that they are healthier with more frequent sex. So people are being led by common culture to think frequency is the goal. Osho takes the point that you should only do it when you are flowing at a higher level so that the experience adds to your totality, your consciousness, and not using sex for other goals or letting it become boring. Osho writes (page 265): "Wait for the right moment. There are a few spaces - they come; nobody can manage them. Sometimes they are there. They are just divine gifts. One day suddenly you feel you are flowing. You don't have any weight, feel like you are flying. Some day you feel that you would like to give everything you can to your woman; that is the right moment. Meditate, dance, sing, and let love happen amid dance, singing, meditation, prayer. Then it will have a different quality - the quality of the sacred... When love becomes sacred, it simply makes you so contented, so tremendously at ease and at home." Not for the sake of duty, not because there is nothing to do, not as a path to reconciliation or just to satisfy the person you are living with. Only out of joy. That's one message among many.

The book (and his others) are an argument for tantric sex and other ways to become conscious and superconscious. Tantric sex is not really about sex; it is meditation in everything you do all day and night, including sex. Now, back in the 70s these concepts were tossed around more with young adults than nowadays, but it was also held up to ridicule and misrepresentation by the middle-aged and older people who thought it was just a bunch of crass hippy stuff. While the lowest experience of sex is relief, like a sneeze, tantric sex is meditation during sex, which is a whole different experience. Energy is recycled and creative and takes the experience to a higher plane in which ego and time vanish. It is not just about making an experience memorable; it is about continuing to evolve your consciousness, and create new circuitry. In the 70s we were determined not to be embarrassed about sex, to deconstruct sexual conditioning, and some people were content with that goal. But there was more; there were people who were constructing notions of being careful with your sexuality but in a different way, sex as a luxury not a need, as part of a whole life-awareness to achieve higher consciousness. To be a witness, to increase your aliveness and to aspire to a higher level of consciousness with your sexualilty is very different than simply seeking multiple experiences with multiple partners. The goal of tantric sex is that only by remaining aware does past conditioning not enter the experience and a new circuit is created... circuitry into a higher consciousness that remains with you outside the sexual experience. The mind becomes empty, centered, and old ideas drop away. You and your partner can dissolve into the greater energy and drop the ego from the heart. If you don't work on transcending your ego you will end up old with "very strengthened deep-rooted ego," a 70-80 year old ego. In contrast, childhood is nostalgic because the child feels himself or herself part of the cosmic flow, pre-ego.

A few points as a lot of science has been done that would be taking into consideration:

1. Osho is for people not being shamed by their bodies or overstimulated by nudity, sexual experiementation for males and females alike, which is the direction things are going mainly due to birth control and condoms for protection against pregancy and disease. However, sexual experimentation with multiple partners for women has a biological drawback which is that oxytocin is excreted creating a bonding effect during the sexual experience. Data indicates that this can "wear out" and young women having multiple partners appear to reach a point where they cannot "fall in love" biologically even with their spouse and perhaps affect bonding with their children. Psychologically, the risk is that either sex could bond with the wrong person in casual experiementation.

2. Neurotheology is being questioned. Is it that when the brain stops mysteriously God happens or are we looking at a predictable neuron thing? Brain-mapping indicates that the poserior superior parietal lobe weaves sensory data into the feeling of self ends and the rest of the world begins. If that becomes inactive by deprvivation of sensory input, by inward concentration, the orientation area of the brain cannot find the border between self and the world. The brain has no choice but to perceive the brain to be endless, to be connected with everything - one with creation, exactly what mystics report as a result of prolonged meditation.

It seems to me, however, that there is a lot to say for not entrenching one's ego, that it is beneficial to work at dissolving that border between self and the world in order to stay flexible and sensitive to extrasensory perceptions, including intuition, to stay in the cosmic flow and open to ideas. It appears to me that the rigid egotist gets increasingly hard and narrow, self-centered and certain.

These kind of data came about after Osho's demise and I still think that he has a host of kind of brilliant ideas and insights which may move thought forward, not with absolute agreement, but with gratitude.

Mind-blowing!!!

Take your sex-life to the next level. A spiritual connection in sex makes an exponential difference. It is well-written, does not come off as preachy, or too "woo-woo." Truly mind-blowing... in more ways than one!

Osho: From sex to superconsciousness
By Ashtar Command
Osho is the same person as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. I don't think Bhagwan needs a closer introduction. He was a quite notorious cult leader about thirty years ago - in Oregon, of all places. In contrast to most other cult leaders, Bhagwan managed to salvage *some* of his reputation by exposing the murderous machinations of his closest aides, even inviting the proper authorities to investigate. Later, Bhagwan returned to his native India, where he changed his name to the incomprehensible Osho, probably because the old name was too tainted. "Osho" is also the name inscribed on his tombstone. (He died in 1990.)

Although I can't really relate to his philosophy, it's nevertheless a pity that Osho screwed up and became a cult leader. In some strange kind of way, I like the man - or at least his public image. Osho never called himself a guru or claimed to be divine, and he was often deliberately frivolous or provocative. Please look him up on Youtube, if you don't know what I'm talking about! Osho's message sounds like a curious blend of very low church Hinduism, Western self-help techniques, Nietzsche, libertarianism and hedonism. He wanted people to combine the traits of Zorba with those of the Buddha. Would the world really be a better place if we would all be Neo-Sannyasins? No idea. But perhaps it would be more fun! If only Osho hadn't screwed up in Oregon...

"Sex Matters" is a book containing talks by Osho on the subject of sex. No dates are given, but as far as I understand, the talks in part I were held in India, already before Osho moved to the United States. The talks in section III seems to be more recent, perhaps from the Oregon period? Osho became controversial in deeply conservative and patriarchal India because of his outspoken attitude towards sex, and his constant criticism of mainline Hinduism, especially the ascetic holy men. Indeed, most of his followers have always been Westerners.

However, if you are looking for some kind of steaming exegesis of the Kama Sutra, you will be disappointed. In fact, most of "Sex Matters" deals with Osho's views on the relationship between spirituality, sexuality and celibacy. Interesting, to be sure, but hardly sexy. Osho believes that sex has to be transcended, so humans can reach a state he calls superconsciousness. However, the only way to transcend sex is to go through sex. Thus, sex shouldn't be repudiated or repressed. Indeed, Osho believes that by repressing sex, society has become sick to the bones. Why are humans constantly obsessed and preoccupied with sex? According to Osho, it's because we long for timelessness, egolessness and bliss. In sex, this is temporarily reached in orgasm. However, in meditation, we can experience a more perfect kind of bliss. Therefore, the sexual orgasm must be transformed into meditation and superconsciousness. Osho claims to know a meditation technique by which the orgasm can be prolongued for several hours. After this, the individual will no longer be interested in sex. He will become truly celibate the rest of his life. The ascetic "holy men" of India are hypocrites. They may be technically celibate, but in reality they are constantly preoccupied with sexual thoughts and desires. Only by releasing the sexual energies, can these be transformed into something higher.

To a critical outsider, Osho's advice seems contradictory. On the one hand, he has no problems with divorce, premarital sex, nudity, homosexuality or bisexuality. He wants people to be life affirming instead of life denying, and often comes close to sounding like a hedonist. (This is why his talks became controversial in India.) On the other hand, he wants sex to be spiritualized, turned into "real love", and hence turned off, with people essentially becoming asexual. It's not clear how these two traits can be combined. How do you combine "Zorba" with "Buddha"? Perhaps Osho counts on some kind of catharsis effect? If people indulge in sex, they will eventually loose interest in it. Or so Osho believes. In the third part of the book, it turns out that Osho isn't particularly interested in giving concrete advice about sexual problems. Indeed, he believes that Westerners are too obsessed with having orgasms! Just relax, experiment and go with the flow, is the rather anticlimactic advice. But then, who knows? It may just be working... More murky is Osho's ultimate goal: a society of supermen, apparently an idiosyncratic version of Nietzsche. (Some have accused Osho of incipient fascism.)

"Sex Matters" is a relatively easy read. If the book feels difficult, it's probably because it takes some time to get accustomed to Osho's strange philosophy. As such, Osho's talks aren't superintellectual or overly theoretical. They are often lightened up by funny anecdotes or frivolous jokes. (Including a joke about the Pope and a gay man!) If the book is the best introduction to Osho's worldwiew, I don't know, since I haven't read all his books. Has anyone? Personally, however, I found "Sex Matters" to be an interesting gate into the strange land of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh...

A Chainless Soul: A Life of Emily Bronte, by Katherine Frank

The most gifted of her famous, troubled family, Emily Bronte has too often been portrayed in "storm-tossed, sentimental" biographies, according to Katherine Frank. Now Frank presents a startling new interpretation: pledged to self-denial and social isolation, Emily starved herself, contributing to her wild imagination. 16-page insert.

From Publishers Weekly
Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, "a saga of . . . transcendent, death-defying love," is also "a book profoundly concerned with food and hunger and starvation," observes Frank. Bronte's oft-celebrated mystical temperament, in Frank's persuasive diagnosis, was a manifestation of anorexia nervosa, as evidenced by her refusal to eat, her extreme slenderness, her retreat into an interior fantasy world. In an extraordinary, remarkably intimate biography that is as emotionally charged as a Bronte novel, Frank ( A Voyager Out: The Life of Mary Kingsley ) dismantles the conventional, rhapsodic family story of the storm-tossed Brontes. She deftly limns Emily's older sister, Charlotte, wracked by "religious depressions"; her brother, Branwell, dosing himself with laudanum; and Anne, meekly reconciled to "her assigned family role as the insignificant little sister." Emily Bronte emerges as a "hunger artist" who sustained a fragile illusion of control through self-denial, but also as a woman of courage and inflexible will, indifferent to the world's opinions. Illustrated.

From Library Journal
The author of a biography of Mary Kingsley ( A Voyager Out , LJ 9/15/86), Frank justifies her addition to the massive stacks of Bronte literature by claiming to demonstrate that Emily suffered from anorexia nervosa as a response to feelings of helplessness and a need for control. However, she seldom quotes reliable sources for substantiation and even contradicts herself on occasion, as when she states that we know nothing of Bronte's tenure as a governess at Law Hill, then asserts that the homesick young woman fasted herself into illness there in order to return to Haworth. It's impossible to tell whether Bronte's behavior conformed to a clinical definition of anorexia, since Frank fails to provide such a definition. She offers instead a rambling rehash of previously published Bronte family biographies with too much imaginative speculation about what Emily and others were feeling based on too little solid evidence.

Chainless Soul?
By Amazon Customer
Although it seems unrealistic to expect complete objectivity from any biographer, Katherine Frank shows a level of bias toward her subject somewhat striking in the genre. Her descriptions of Emily Bronte are enthusiastic and warm, even when Emily's behavior (by her own description) warrants at least some kind of approbation, or at least evenhandedness. This unmitigated warmth is reserved for Emily alone, however; Charlotte, for example, is portrayed as living a constant struggle with conventionality which Emily gloriously escapes. Of particular interest is the expression of Emily and Charlotte's intense relationship. Charlotte consistently suffers in the comparisons with her sister -- at least by Frank's view. She doesn't seem interested in exploring Charlotte's suffering under Emily's emotional tyranny, even though she does describe it in detail. One gets the impression that Charlotte would do better in this biography if only she would care a little less about what others think. Their brother, Branwell, fares badly as well, and Frank's conclusion regarding one of Branwell's many pathetic attempts to be employed that he had been terminated due to a homosexual advance on his pupil seems strikingly unsubstantiated. Frank seems to come to this conclusion only because she can't think of any other. In the end, it's not that the reader can't see what Frank shows as part of Emily's character, it's that it's not the only thing to be seen.

Not as bad as you might believe...
By Lina
Many of Frank's arguments were convincing to me--especially those regarding Emily's peculiar eating habits. All of her conclusions were backed up with sources, etc. Although I didn't believe this spin on the life of the Brontes word for word, I do think it was worthly of more than 1 star, hence my review. Check it out--you may disagree, but isn't that part of the fun?

Impressive
By Voves
What I particularly like about this well written book is Frank connects events and put them in context by providing a strong time line. She is constantly reminding the reader when , often the very day , events were happening in the Bronte world ...when we keep that in mind , the import and connection between these events is more obvious . She has read a great deal and distilled it into a slim volume .

An author cannot tell the Bronte enthusiast what to think about this or that ...but if you give us something to think about...that is a book welcomed to one's collection

Trauma, Torture and Dissociation: A Psychoanalytic View, by Aida Alayarian

Understanding trauma is central in this book, for both a practical and theoretical challenge from a relational psychoanalytical perspective, with the view that childhood trauma of a patient is a dual narration along with the developmental processes as a factor creating resilient qualities. The theoretical material is presented in close conjunction with clinical data in the form of vignettes and case studies to illustrate the key points. Presentation of vignettes and case studies focuses on the multidimensional approach examining the contributions of psychoanalysis, emphasizing the act of dissociation (healthy and unhealthy). Specific attention is given to the internalization of the m/other/object as the “listening other”, and the dissociated part/s that may result in an over idealized yet feared object. The final discussion focuses on how patients in therapy become able to transform fears into “psychic space” and breaking away from vulnerability, by developing a better “sense of self”, as the result of having the therapists as the “listening other”. The central theory of psychoanalysis as a form of treatment that enhances resilience in relation in working with patient experienced trauma considered, by the mean of assessing relationship change in transference as an objective method of determining patience psychical alteration.

Review
"Dr Alayarian’s work on dissociation is an important contribution to research rooted in the psychoanalytic tradition. Like Winnicott (1986) who discussed the splitting of the self as an achievement of personal growth in some circumstances, she sees healthy dissociation as a skill of survival for the traumatized. The research is the fruition of therapy with children and adults over decades and is valuable for those working with the increasing scope of trauma both in the NHS and private practice." (Lennox K. Thomas, Consultant Psychotherapist, British Association of Psychotherapists; Fellow)
