Dream-textbook for teaching the New Testament

Bart Ehrman's 'The New Testament' is a superb work for teachers seeking to assign their students a readable, reliable, and challenging introduction to the history of earliest Christianity and its literature. Incidentally, it would also be a fine first stop for intelligent readers who want to know what historians of early Christianity are saying about the birth of this religion and the origins of the New Testament. The work is engagingly written, with an occasional and not inappropriate first-person, and it has the merit of representing balanced, critical positions in the much debated-territory of New Testament studies. Ehrman's disinclination to accept a variety of trendy and dubious by-ways in New Testamental studies can be seen in his treatment of three areas. First, while not neglecting the Greco-Roman context, he positions Jesus squarely in the Jewish context and sees him as an apocalyptic teaching bent on internal reform of Judaism. Miracles are part of the picture, as they were for other charismatic Jewish teachers of the time (cf. the work of Geza Vermes). Ehrman declines to follow the scholars who with zeal and imagination claim to sort out editorial levels (and the communities or theological trajectories) in the hypothetical 'Q' document ('Q' = German 'Quelle' or 'source', i.e., the hypothetical sayings source lying behind the commonalities in Matthew and Luke and not in Mark). Thirdly in this regard, Ehrman refuses the common move of positing the existence of gnostic Christianity (or any 'gnosticism) prior to the first hard evidence for it in the late first or early second century. So this is a book that you can trust to pass on the generally accepted theories and to reject the more speculative moves of the field. For those interested in using this work as a textbook in a New Testament or Early Christianity course, I recommend it highly, having used it for two years in a row with excellent results. It is very readable, has something of a personal tone, and includes Ehrman's own attempts to explain the process of learning to students, e.g., his claim that one learn by comparison. There is a 'history of religions' strain to the book, which comes out in his insistence on religion as an aspect of culture and human life, as well as in his recognition (commonplace in the field) of early Christianity having consisted in a variety of early Christianities. The book comes with nice illustrations, maps, reproductions of ancient art, etc. (limited to B&W, no doubt to keep the price down). The book has what to me is the merit of posing challenging historical questions about early Christianity that make students think hard about religion. At the same time Ehrman, according to his own design, is theologically neutral. He does not feel compared to do theology (or undo theology!) for his readers; he merely states largely accepted theories which the reader or professor is free to use as a basis for developing his or her own questions, be they theological or historical. Would that we had a text of this sort for teaching an introduction to the Hebrew Bible!

A HISTORICAL Perspective

In my view, Bart Ehrman writes with more clarity and strength than any other New Testament scholar. I have heard him speak, listened to his tapes and read his books. He exudes competency, frequently reminding us that his conclusions are those of a historian - then spends a little time explaining what that means. In the case of "The New Testament," it means he will examine authorship issues, content and revelancy of the various gospels, letters and apocolypses - inside or outside of the canon - differently than they might be examined from the pulpit. For example, issues of dogma are extensively discussed, but not endorsed nor advocated. Instead, they are examined for consistency within the whole context of the other books and the political setting in which the early church solidified its views. As a matter of fact, he is so non-committal it is impossible to tell exactly where he stands - although it is obvious he takes a liberal stance of some sort.

I had more than my share of fundamentalist preaching, yet values at home were those of inquiry and evidence toward the world in general. Ehrman's approach is more to my liking than reiteration of a dogma I've already heard, documented by passages from scripture pre-selected to prove a certain view. He compares the gospels, discusses the nuances of their differing themes and considers their probable authorship. The letters are treated similarly and the book of Revelations is subjected to a fascinating analysis. Consider the New Testament subjected to the kind of scrutiny one of Shakespeare's plays might receive from a college professor of western world literature - in which speculation is kept to a minimum and explanation is made as to the historical context of the story.

For example, he compares the teachings of the historical Jesus with the theological views of the apostle Paul: "Jesus proclaimed the imminent arrival of a cosmic judge from heaven, the Son of Man, and urged his followers to prepare by repenting and returning to a faithful adherence to God's law. Paul, on the other hand, insisted that following the Law would have no bearing on one's salvation, that in fact one could be saved only through faith in Christ's death and resurrection. Notwithstanding the broad similarities between these two men, both of them first-century apocalyptic Jews, their differences are striking. Do Jesus and Paul represent the same religion? Or has Paul transformed the religion OF Jesus into the religion ABOUT Jesus?"

Perhaps not for all readers, but certainly for that segment of curious Christians or non-Christians who wish to be exposed to a scholarly account of issues surrounding the New Testament - from a historical point of view - this is your book.

Ehrman - Love Him or Hate Him, but don't Ignore His Academic Perspective Challenging the Theological Status Quo

Dr. Ehrman is a great academic in his field and causes you to challenge the common perceptions and disinformation that we've learned in Sunday school. As a Christian, I have a thirst for knowledge in my faith and the historical timeframe of the period. Whether it's the authorship of the New Testament, the language(s) of the time, culture, or how information was passed down over time, this book makes understanding the time period and the burgeoning religion, as it took hold. His book, "Forged", I would also recommend, as it challenges our understanding of who wrote the books from our modern Canon and why we should be skeptical of their attribution and why certain, disputed epistles should be reconsidered - an academic discussion that common church goers are unaware of. He also has an additional book countering the Mythicist argument that neo-Atheists have grasped onto, especially with non-academic discourse online. I always recommend Ehrman to my friends, Christian or non-Christian to further our understanding and the debate on theological grounds. I'm hoping we can update our Canon and theology after 2,000 through academic discourse. (Doubtful, as most denominations would think this is heretical, even if it is academically dishonest to continue perpetrating incorrect information)

The most used book in my library.

Simply put, this is an excellent book. I have five books on my bookshelf covering HDL, and this book is by far the most informative and practical. The number of examples containing Verilog code, a test bench, a synthesized netlist, and simulation results is incredible. It covers some very important topics in detail that my other books don't even mention (design partitioning, clock domain synchronization, and proper gating of clocks immediately come to mind). I especially like the in-depth treatment the book gives to writing sythesizable code. Synthesis isn't an after thought; it is a primary focus exactly as it should be. The index is sufficient and larger than most books, but this book deserves more.
As an experienced engineer and engineering manager, I have used the text to provide examples, algorithms, and to instruct my engineering staff. This book is not only my main Verilog book, but it is my digital design reference as well.

The best book for Verilog synthesis

This is the best book that I have found for Verilog synthesis. There are many good books on Verilog, but most of them focus on simulation. This book is specifically useful for synthesis.

The book seems intended to be used for a course on digital logic design. The first few chapters deal with digital logic design generally, and can be ignored. The discussion of Verilog begins after 100 pages in chapter 4.

The core of the book is chapters 4 through 7, which describe how to define digital logic with Verilog. This is approximately 300 pages of description, discussion, and examples. The examples are well written, and very useful. The examples show, in a simple and straightforward manner, how to write Verilog that synthesizes well.

Chapter 8 covers programmable logic devices, such as CPLDs and FPGAs. Unfortunately, the focus of the chapter is on specific device families, and is only of historical interest. For example, none of the Xilinx FPGAs discussed would be recommended in a new design. If the chapter had covered the basic concepts of device categories of interest, it might remain useful.

The last few chapters cover some advanced topics, such as digital signal processing. A few of the topics covered are interesting. Most are too incomplete to be useful, and I believe that some of them (such as FIR filters) will not synthesize in a realistic case.

The appendicies are extensive, and provide a reference for Verilog.

The strength of the book is that it is the only one I have found that covers Verilog synthesis clearly. That portion of the book is a pleasure to use. The weakness of the book is that large sections are essentially irrelevant. It is a 1000 page book that would make a good 400 page book.

The book would be significantly improved by an update, especially to Verilog 2001. In the current edition, Verilog 2001 is mentioned only in an appendix.

A good book for advanced classes on Logic design

I am using this book for my graduate level classes on "Digital System Design Automation (From HDL to FPGA)". The book is very useful - It has, from one hand a very reasonable methodology behind. From the other hand it is an excellent collection of design examples. Especially important is the fact that the book is bundled with Xilinx ISE Student edition tools. The book is fully supported by presentation slides available from the author.

About the Author

Sōseki Natsume (1868–1916) is widely considered the foremost novelist in modern Japanese history. After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University in 1893 and a brief stint as a teacher, Sōseki spent two years in London on a Japanese government scholarship. He returned to Tokyo to lecture English Literature. Numerous nervous disorders forced him to give up teaching in 1908, at which point he dedicated his life to writing full-time, producing fourteen novels as well as a raft of poetry, academic essays, autobiographical pieces and fairy tales.

Great workbook for teaching kids ESL

I bought 3 different workbooks to use with ESL kids ages 10-14 and this is by far my favorite. It has tons of pictures and is especially easy to use interactively. What's more, sometimes it can be hilarious! I don't know if the humor is intentional but lots of times I find myself cracking up in front of the students at something in the book. Example: There's a picture of two raggedy men sitting on a bench with a makeshift fire and a sign behind them that says CITY PARK. Question: "Are they businessmen?" Answer: "No, they aren't. They're bums!" Laughed a good 3 minutes on that one.

So I don't know about everything being terribly appropriate, but I love this workbook and the kids definitely show more enthusiasm than with the other books. It's very intuitive, fun and interesting. The downside is that it's a tad pricey, actually maybe more than a tad (triple the price of the other workbooks in fact!). Still, if you're looking for something to teach kids basic English, I recommend this workbook as the best option you'll be able to find in Barnes & Nobles or Borders.

This book is a great workbook and a textbook that can be used for the ESL beginners. I learned English from it when I came to the USA. It covers basic tenses, numbers, includes nice stories and dialogues. I would recommend it to everyone!!!

I made every effort to note accurately all the linguistic details of the text, its grammatical niceties, its allusions, even its play upon words. Do yourself a favor and purchase this book.

If I had to use one word to describe this commentary I would choose, "meaty". There is a lot of information in this text. I believe that anyone who wants to understand the book of Genesis should have this book. I can't believe that as a Christian I had never heard of Rabbi Cassuto but I can understand why.

In my humble opinion, I would say that any library is without any of Rabbi Cassuto books is incomplete. It is a must have Commentary for the book of Genesis. I would also say that you may want to read his "The Documentary Hypothesis" book as he refers to it frequently in this book.

Also his commentary is unlike any Christian commentary that I personally have read. Do yourself a favor and purchase this book.

An accurate commentary of Genesis.

This commentary is very detailed and sometimes difficult to keep up with, but it does not compromise, and very clearly defends the literal translation of the most important section of the Bible. Perfect for Christians seeking truth!

Best source for fundmantals for applications

If you take the time to master just a porition of this encyclopedic refrence, you'll find a ready transition to the applied field in in kinematics of vehicle motion, robotics, optical imaging theory, theory of gears and even circuit theory and polarizations. Much of this material is either generalized in modern geometry to the point where the origins are completely obscured, or specialized to the point where it is impossible to see the "magic" behind the underlying theme. This should be a Theoretical Minimum in applied math. There is a deduction of one star because the wordiness in some sections can be expanded out in pictorial form for easier comprehension without the reader's resorting to pencil and paper at every turn.

An Important book but hard to read

This book is an important reference for any researcher in kinematics, it covers many important results for analysis and design of mechanisms. Unfortunately, this book is not easy to read for screw theory, which is not very popular outside kinematics, is used extensively. One particular problem for this book is that sometimes the authors tried to be too general and worked in n-dimension, this certainly would not help the readers as most of them only need kinematics in 3D.

A poet not well known in the US, but brilliant, and I greatly prefer the dual-language edition, as I have with other poets - it's the only way to capture some of the intended "sound" that is so integral to poetry.

By the dawn of 1945, the Western Allies had driven back Hitler s last, desperate effort in the Ardennes. The only hope for America and Britain to retain what they could of Central Europe was to take Berlin, but the 'Russian steamroller' forestalled them. Massive Soviet forces attacked the city in April 1945 - the last act of the confrontation between the Communists and the National Socialists and the first act of the Cold War. Great Book!

I have over 800 military books in my personal library, and I am a member of the Board of Directors of one of the State's military museums. In addition, I've been studying military history for the past 50 years. I found this short summary an excellent read that I count as part of my top 10 military books. I love the different historical perspective this series of military monographs from Periscopio Publications (distributed by Squadron/Signal Publications) accomplishes. This series is written by Greek authors that provide a refreshing viewpoint from the standard United States historical perspective. I particularly like the propaganda summary of World War 2 in the Western theater of operations that this publication illustrates.
