Excellent resource to coursework

Language Awareness was a required text in one of my classes, Rhetoric: Theory and Practice. It was used as supplemental material to the course topic. I read selections and then responded to them in writing using concepts that I'd learned from the class. The actual selections and exercises provide an excellent spring board for thought.

It was definitely a fun and useful addition to my learning process during the course.

A "Con"-Text Book for Writing Students and Teachers

I have used previous editions of this book in my college freshman composition courses. It does what very few composition texts or readers have ever done: the editors recognize that writing (and reading, of course) does not occur in isolation, but within the context of our own and our students' lives. Particularly, it aids students to think about their own writing in light of the cultural, psychological, and political issues of language, literacy, argumentation, and mass media. They include much about minority and non-Western cultures, plus articles and essays from both the present and the past. If you want to enhance your own or your students' understanding of the complex and exciting world of language, this is the book for you.

Gary M. Burge (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. Very enjoyable, though Ebook formatting needs improvment.

This is a very enjoyable read, though not without its faults. The formatting of the Kindle edition is disruptive, with the helpful historical notes interspersed with the narrative. I enjoyed both the narrative and the historical notes, but there needs to be some work in the next Ebook edition to help it flow better.

I also found the ending to be too abrupt. I'd prefer a "Week and a Half" in the life instead. Overall, this was an insightful weekend read that provides the best of historical fiction. I learned a bit about Roman and Jewish culture in the process and gave found it to be useful in small-group discussions. I will likely read more in the series.

I read this book for a New Testament Class I'm taking. It is a great read. The story moves very quickly and provides a lot of factual details about life at the time of Jesus. The story itself is fictional but based on a few of the passages in gospels about the Centurion. If I was going to make a recommendation I'd say the book is good enough for high school and above.

By applying this method in recent decades, the industry has created an astonishingly good safety record.

Few of us put lives at risk in our daily work as surgeons and pilots do, but we all have a strong interest in avoiding predictable and preventable errors. So why don’t we all embrace the aviation approach to failure rather than the health-care approach? As Matthew Syed shows in this eye-opening book, the answer is rooted in human psychology and organizational culture.

Syed argues that the most important determinant of success in any field is an acknowledgment of failure and a willingness to engage with it. Yet most of us are stuck in a relationship with failure that impedes progress, halts innovation, and damages our careers and personal lives. GREAT BOOK. HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING!

A colleague of mine sent me a link to a BBC article regarding this book several weeks ago. As an patented inventor and product designer I was very intrigued by the title. This is the first book I have read by this author. As I read through its pages, I found Matthew Syed's writing style to be captivating enough to keep my attention while describing events and facts which could otherwise be very dry. For that reason, I am compelled to read his other works, but merely based on the content, I have already recommended this book to dozens of people. The concept of learning from mistakes is as old as recorded history. However, if you think that is what this book is about, think again. There are many nuances to the subject matter disclosed which can be very thought provoking and enlightening. On several occasions I actually put the book down, feeling compelled to rethink dozens of situations in my own life where I have made mistakes, not learned from them and ended up repeating them, stuck in closed loop logic.
My key takeaway from reading this book is that Mr. Syed identifies a well-known flaw in humanity to which some critics at first blush might yawn and say “so what, nothing new here” Failure analysis has been around for centuries. Not exactly… this book covers a lot of ground. The Black Box failure analysis model has only been in use for a very limited amount of time in human history, yielding incredible results in aviation safety used for the benefit of all humanity. Yes, individuals throughout history have used versions of failure analysis to solve issues, either for themselves or for small scale issues. But this recent model transcends others in that it truly eliminates the need or benefit of lying, omitting information or tampering with evidence. By doing so, you only perpetuate a problem which could eventually end up costing you your life or the life of your loved ones. I spoke my friend who is a pilot and Lt. Col in the US Air Force about claims in this book and he confirmed the legitimacy and efficacy of the program, stating that US Military standards are slightly different than commercial aviation, but no doubt that you are immune to prosecution and encouraged to fully disclose information, which is solely used to improve safety for not only for the military, but for the greater good of all mankind. In my mind, that is what makes it unique.
If you were to tell a pilot in 1935 that in 2015, more pilgrims would die traveling on foot to Mecca (or being politically correct, Hajj 2015), then 3 billion passengers on commercial airplanes, travelling at 575 mph, taking off and landing in everything from thunderstorms and dense fog to snow, ice and gale force winds, sometimes even banking between skyscrapers on approach, they would have looked at you as though you were insane and told you to seek immediate psychological help. Black Box Thinking is one of the best books that touches the heart topic of why our society these days is so ill-mannered on how we treat others and how afraid we are from other blaming us these days. We always constantly blame other people, filling in the gaps that do not exist, with our generalizations. We always attribute failure as a negative connotation, being the whole reason or the whole motivation why everybody wants to hide the truth from the public. What you can learn through black box thinking is that it is okay to criticize specific topics that you are knowledgeable and don't fill in the gaps, it is okay to find the failures of others, but not as a dead end, but as their only way to gain any personal growth.

This book is more than just a treasure. It is a living creature that will challenge the current mindset of society. It will create a paradigm shift in how we perceive and treat individuals between today and tomorrow, a template that will prevent us doing the same mistakes over and over again no matter the situation.

I got inspired much by this book. It is great that this book became popular, so more people are aware of this problem.

Great content - CD's should have been better

The content of this book is a real eye opener to us all who deny our mistakes in life. A very worthwhile book. Full marks to both Matthew Syed the author and Simon Slater the reader.
However, the CD version I received contained no title, author, speaker, date, chapters etc in the file data making it difficult to use other than the obvious disc and track numbers, so a very poor product considering the Penguin publishers. Would have expected better. Packaging was minimal, especially taking into account the international delivery distance involved, resulting in some crushing of the edge of the box, however the CD's survived this ok.

About the Author
Stephen L. Herman--both an electrician and a teacher for more than 30 years--authored numerous popular textbooks on the subjects of electricity and mathematics. Very good introduction

This review applies to the 6th edition. This is a very good introduction to all of the various technologies of modern commercial AC power. It includes good descriptions of various 3-phase systems and their components (alternators, transformers, and motors). The book starts with the the very basics, but a working knowledge of basic math and electronics helps. Very readable with good diagrams. If you want to understand the difference between split-phase and three-phase current, or the difference between an induction motor and a synchronous motor, this is the book for you.

Overpricing Fundamentals

Some publishers either don't think twice about overcharging the public or never have competent people read their books before publication. For an electrical book with a price of $100 or more, one should get a college level engineering book written well by a highly qualified author. This book is a vocational level collection of the same old stuff that field workers have been saddled with for the last century or more. In short, the the trained monkey version of electricity designed to put field workers on the job without teaching them what electricity is really about. Every few years a new edition comes out with a word or two about new technology or a CD ROM and a big price increase. There ought to be a law against this...
To be fair Hermann is a better author than most of these regurgitators of the same old slip shod ideas. He is a few levels above the likes of a Fowler, but then again, who isn't? However, there is no point in getting his latest edition unless you have a gun pointed at you. Do yourself a huge favor and buy or borrow an old edition. Nothing authors like this write is worth more than 15 bucks.

I worked on the '97 edition, and I'm impressed!

A biology graduate studying under Lynn Margulis, I was fortunate enough to be involved in preparing "The Biosphere" for publication; and even the raw typescript I transferred onto disk was impressive! Let me eagerly recommend V.I. Vernadsky, as the unsung Charles Darwin of geological and ecological science. In his time, Academician Vernadsky was a groundbreaker: the first to appreciate the vast scope of life's chemical influence upon the Earth ... this planet, which owes its own uniqueness to the very "living matter" of which we, just as all other organisms, are a part. To the readers of today, Vernadsky's own words tell us the historic beginnings of the discipline this brilliant, long-uncredited scientist's ideas founded. No student or advocate of global ecology should miss this thought-provoking, eye-opening book!

A work of rare genius rediscovered

It's hard to read this book without coming away with the impression of a powerful, original mind at work. Many of Vernadsky's ideas remain unappreciated to this day. In particular, the idea of life as a cosmological phenomenon, as a means by which energy is stored and transformed on a planetary scale, should become increasingly important as the science of astrobiology develops a rigorous intellectual basis.

I'm very happy that Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky becomes little by little known for the English speaking public. Although his "Biosphere" has been written over 70 years ago, even now its ideas remain fresh and actual. Indeed, the "Biosphere" provides a new level of thinking which permits us to consider Vladimir Vernadsky as a deepest naturalist of our century. And now I'm looking forward to the time when they will be translated and published his subsequent books - first of all the book on the noosphere: "Scientific thought as a planet phenomenon".

Hard copy good, digital copy horribly formatted.

Hard copy is excellent, digital copy is horribly formatted.

Have not dived into this book academically but soon will, did not want to to degrade its review (stars) but upon reviewing the digital copy (7 day kindle trial), and noticed the formatting its HORRIBLE. Its not a 1 to 1 translation, but a butchered book were a single image takes up a whole page, a few paragraphs on single page etc.

Save your money and do not buy the digital version.
