A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS & INTERVIEWS ABOUT OTHER WRITERS, LANGUAGE, ETC.
By Steven H Propp
Michel Foucault (1926-1984) was a French philosopher, historian of ideas, and social theorist and activist; he wrote many books, such as Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason, The Birth of the Clinic, Discipline & Punish: The Birth of the Prison, The History of Sexuality, Vol. 1: An Introduction, The History of Sexuality, Vol. 2: The Use of Pleasure, The History of Sexuality, Vol. 3: The Care of the Self, etc. Openly gay [see the James Miller biography, The Passion of Michel Foucault], he died of AIDS---the first “public figure” in France to die of the virus.

[NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 240-page paperback edition.]

The editor wrote in the Preface to this 1977 collection, “This collection arose out of the desire to come to terms with the already considerable accomplishment of Michel Foucault. I had hoped that an examination of his essays on the writers who have influenced him would resolve the difficulties of his books. Not unexpectedly, the essays reveal some continuity of intention and the persistence of certain preoccupations, but hardly the security of an origin… The seven essays that make up the major portion of this book reflect Foucault’s attitudes toward language.”

He wrote in one essay, “If philosophy is now experienced as a multiple desert, it is not because it has lost its proper object or the freshness of its experience, but because it has been suddenly divested of that language which is historically ‘natural’ to it. We do not experience the end of philosophy, but a philosophy which regains its speech and finds itself again only in the marginal region which borders its limits: that is, which finds itself either in a purified metalanguage or in the thickness of words enclosed by their darkness, by their blind truth.” (Pg. 41)

In the essay ‘What is an Author?’ he said, “my objective in ‘The Order of Things’ had been to analyse verbal clusters as discursive layers which fall outside the familiar categories of a book, a work, or an author. But while I considered ‘natural history,’ the ‘analysis of wealth,’ and ‘political economy’ in general terms, I neglected a similar analysis of the author and his works; it is perhaps due to this omission that I employed the names of authors throughout this book in a native and often crude fashion. I spoke of Buffon, Cuvier, Ricardo, and others as well, but failed to realize that I had allowed their names to function ambiguously. This has proved an embarrassment to me in that my oversight has served to raise two pertinent objections. It was argued that I had not properly described Buffon… and that my handling of Marx was pitifully inadequate… it was argued that I had created monstrous families by bringing together names as disparate as Buffon and Linnaeus or by placing Cuvier next to Darwin… [But] I wanted to determine… the functional conditions of specific discursive practices.” (Pg. 113-114)

He continues, “the writing of our day has freed itself from the necessity of ‘expression’; it only refers to itself, yet it is not restricted to the confines of interiority… Moreover, it implies an action that is always testing the limits of its regularity, transgressing and reversing an order that it accepts and manipulates. Writing unfolds like a game that inevitably moves beyond its own rules and finally leaves them behind.” (Pg. 116)

In another essay, ‘Theatrum Philosophicum,’ he observes, “The philosophy of representation---of the original, the first time, resemblance, imitation, faithfulness---is dissolving; and the arrow of the simulacrum released by the Epicureans is headed in our direction. It gives birth---rebirth---to a ‘phantasmaphysics.’” (Pg. 172)

He comments on Gilles Deleuze, “Deleuze’s proposals, I believe, are directed to lifting this triple subjection which, to this day, is imposed on the event: a metaphysics of the incorporeal event (which is consequently irreducible to a physics of the world), a logic of neutral meaning (rather than a phenomenology of signification based on the subject), and a thought of the present infinitive (and not the raising up of the conceptual future in a part essence).” (Pg. 176)

He says in an interview when asked about his book ‘Discipline and Punish’: “I was surprised that so many who had not been to prison could become interested in its problems, surprised that all those who had never heard the discourse of inmates could so easily understand them. How to we explain this? Isn’t it because, in a general way, the penal system is the form in which power is most obviously seen as power? To place someone in prison, to confine him there, to deprive him of food and heat, and prevent him from leaving, from making love, etc.---this is certainly the most frenzied manifestation of power imaginable.” (Pg. 209-210)

These essays shed further light on Foucault’s thought, and contain many interesting observations of his on other writers. This book will be of great interest to anyone studying Foucault.
