good, but cannot recommend it.

This is a really good book. I will say that. However, I cannot in good conscience suggest it. Why? Because in the time since its been out, the author has written numerous other books, starting another for (possibly as many as six) series'. It leads me to believe she loves to start new ones, but not finish them. That being the case, this author has lost my interest. Now, if you don't mind getting a book that is good, but an incomplete story, then by all means, purchase it. BUT I thought it only fair to say something, as I had been avidly watching the new releases of Me. Phoenix.
For those offended that I would post this.. all I can say is that it's honest and straight forward which is supposed to be the purpose of a review.

Yum!!! HUGE Sons of Judgment fan!

I just finished reading this book, overall I think it took me about 10 hours from "cover" to "cover". Why? Because it was AWESOME!!!

Octavian is a Caster, a judge of sorts for Creatures of the Veil. One of the 3 rules passed down from Heaven is to never touch a human. Then in walks Riley and oops, he couldn't keep his hands off her. They are drawn to each other like a moth to a flame, they can't seem to stay away and fall for each other quickly. Everything is stacked against them it seems and just when something gets worked out, another HUGE kink in their plans and lives happen. Both of them are willing to risk anything, except each other, to save the lives of the other. In the background, there's a war brewing between Demons and Angels and it seems the two of them are caught right in the middle, along with Octavian's family and anyone else they love.

I loved this story. I couldn't believe the twists and turns it had and would be almost gasping for air as I read about their fight for survival. I was shocked beyond words when learning of "what" Octavian and his family are. I did NOT see that surprise coming. I loved the humor and the wit throughout the book. I was laughing so much through this book at the one liners and sarcastic remarks. And the romance, while there was some sexy parts, they weren't too horrible that someone who didn't want to read them, couldn't skip over them. I just have to say that the parts I read were pretty tastefully done and steamy.

My favorite parts of the book? Octavian's banter with his brothers. The twins absolutely cracked me up to no end. I loved the way his parents treated each other...with reverence and love. Daphne was a very welcomed surprise. I couldn't quit figure out her story, hadn't guessed it, until it was revealed, but I thoroughly enjoyed her part in the story. Honestly though, I can't remember a "favorite part" because I enjoyed the entire book and would end up quoting it in its entirety. Ugh, now to wait for book 2!!!

Wow. Just wow. First of all, the beginning of this book showed such promise - I was so excited for this story to unfold. Then, a quarter of the way through the book (which was about 200 pages, this is the longest book ever) the spelling and grammatical errors began - at one point there was one page where I counted 7 errors! It made it so difficult to read. In addition to that, the story itself did not connect, I felt like there was a lot of setting up for this grand reveal and then it was over and anticlimactic. And don't even get me started on when Octavian and Riley FINALLY sleep together (90% through) - worst scene ever. I only finished this book because I wasted so much time reading the rest of it!! I skipped through a lot because it was so repetitive - not reading the second one!

In 1981, Marilynne Robinson wrote Housekeeping, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award and became a modern classic. Since then, she has written two pieces of nonfiction: Mother Country and The Death of Adam. With Gilead, we have, at last, another work of fiction. As with The Great Fire, Shirley Hazzards's return, 22 years after The Transit of Venus, it was worth the long wait. Books such as these take time, and thought, and a certain kind of genius. There are no invidious comparisons to be made. Robinson's books are unalike in every way but one: the same incisive thought and careful prose illuminate both.

The narrator, John Ames, is 76, a preacher who has lived almost all of his life in Gilead, Iowa. He is writing a letter to his almost seven-year-old son, the blessing of his second marriage. It is a summing-up, an apologia, a consideration of his life. Robinson takes the story away from being simply the reminiscences of one man and moves it into the realm of a meditation on fathers and children, particularly sons, on faith, and on the imperfectability of man.

The reason for the letter is Ames's failing health. He wants to leave an account of himself for this son who will never really know him. His greatest regret is that he hasn't much to leave them, in worldly terms. "Your mother told you I'm writing your begats, and you seemed very pleased with the idea. Well, then. What should I record for you?" In the course of the narrative, John Ames records himself, inside and out, in a meditative style. Robinson's prose asks the reader to slow down to the pace of an old man in Gilead, Iowa, in 1956. Ames writes of his father and grandfather, estranged over his grandfather's departure for Kansas to march for abolition and his father's lifelong pacifism. The tension between them, their love for each other and their inability to bridge the chasm of their beliefs is a constant source of rumination for John Ames. Fathers and sons.

The other constant in the book is Ames's friendship since childhood with "old Boughton," a Presbyterian minister. Boughton, father of many children, favors his son, named John Ames Boughton, above all others. Ames must constantly monitor his tendency to be envious of Boughton's bounteous family; his first wife died in childbirth and the baby died almost immediately after her. Jack Boughton is a ne'er-do-well, Ames knows it and strives to love him as he knows he should. Jack arrives in Gilead after a long absence, full of charm and mischief, causing Ames to wonder what influence he might have on Ames's young wife and son when Ames dies.

These are the things that Ames tells his son about: his ancestors, the nature of love and friendship, the part that faith and prayer play in every life and an awareness of one's own culpability. There is also reconciliation without resignation, self-awareness without deprecation, abundant good humor, philosophical queries--Jack asks, "'Do you ever wonder why American Christianity seems to wait for the real thinking to be done elsewhere?'"--and an ongoing sense of childlike wonder at the beauty and variety of God's world.

Fans of Robinson's acclaimed debut Housekeeping (1981) will find that the long wait has been worth it. From the first page of her second novel, the voice of Rev. John Ames mesmerizes with his account of his life—and that of his father and grandfather. Robinson, the author of the classic "Housekeeping," has kept readers waiting twenty-three years for her second novel. It takes the form of a letter, written in the nineteen-fifties, from a seventy-something Iowa minister to his young son, the product of a late marriage. The Reverend John Ames feels that he is in his final days. Nominally, he is writing down the boy's "begats"—three generations of Reverend Ameses, each a little less storied than his forebear—but he is also sifting his long-considered personal faith. At first, there isn't much urgency to the Reverend's task, and we're stuck Sunday-strolling through too many homiletic passages ("He was a good man" "Well, that's the human condition, I suppose"). By book's end, however, when a little fire enters his world, the thoughtful Reverend's counsel sharpens, small wounds deepen, and a credible wisdom emerges. "It is worth living long enough to outlast whatever sense of grievance you may acquire," he affirms.

Eschewing “Theological Twinkies” - A Substansive Examination of the Ultimate Questions

Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead is a meditation on what religion is and what meaning it might still have to offer modern man. “Meditation” is a deliberate word choice, as the narrative is literally the extended reflections of a dying preacher towards his young son who he will likely not be able to raise to adulthood. As such, the story naturally invites the reader to reflect on which memories and admonitions they would want to leave for posterity if faced with a similar predicament.

I have the sense from talking with many atheists and non-religious people that “religious” is often seen as synonymous with “preachy”, especially when the religion in question is Christianity (case in point: whatever derivative, “faith-promoting” Christian cinema is currently being featured at your nearest multiplex or Walmart discount bin). Fortunately, as with all good literature that intelligently addresses the subject of religion, Gilead could hardly be accused of being evangelical, even by the most skeptical critic. In fact, I was particularly attracted to the book because an atheist pundit I occasionally follow claimed it was one of the few books that might convince an atheist that faith actually has some value. If that’s not a good enough endorsement for a curious secular audience, I don’t know what is.

As much as I love theological nuggets in my novels, Gilead is slow digging. It’s about what you would expect of a novel set in a small Iowa town in the middle of nowhere. I didn’t find any of characters outside of the narrator, John Ames, to be particularly compelling, either. That said, as a thematically-driven, rather than character-driven, narrative, I feel that Gilead is best read for the fresh insights it reveals about the meaning and value of ordinary religious life. Robinson provides a satisfying meal of meat where milk is too frequently provided, eschewing “theological Twinkies” in favor of a more substantive examination of the ultimate questions; one that a wide audience of believers and non-believers can mutually enjoy.

Amazingly beautiful

If you are looking for a fast-paced novel with a beginning, middle and end; with a straightforward story, go elsewhere. If you value language, poetry, language as song, theology disguised as fiction, small town living cloaked in spirituality, spend time here in Gilead.

I won't bother with the external tale, an old and dying man, writing a letter to his very young son, to be read when he is long gone, and the son an adult, for that is only the framework upon which the author has hung the questions we should all ask ourselves, questions like: what does it mean to be human; how to love well and fully; what qualities make a person good; how am I seen in the eyes of the world; how do I see myself; what do I call God.

This should not be a fast read. I think it is meant to be read in small units, much as it was written, then pondered for awhile. And perhaps read again. Read the words printed, then "read" the words unspoken.

If you are not religious, don't be put off by the idea that this is a story narrated by a minister, from a family of ministers, and there are a lot of biblical references here. That all is just a way to structure the profound thoughts and ideas we should all consider if we are to be fully human.

This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. I've read thousands. This will be one of the few I'll read again. And again.

A little boy brought joy to their home but at age 76 Ames is ...

Robinson won the Pulitzer Prize for this fictional story of an aging and dying pastor who wants to leave for his young son a written legacy of his life. John Ames is a third generation pastor in the little town of Gilead, Iowa. He has spent virtually his whole life in Gilead, and most of it faithfully pastoring a little church. He married young and had a child, but both his wife and little girl died shortly after the child was born. Ames spent the rest of his life single until age 67 when a young woman attended a Pentecost service at which he was preaching. He immediately fell for her and marriage soon followed. A little boy brought joy to their home but at age 76 Ames is dying of heart disease and he is acutely aware that his son would never remember him, at least nothing of significance. So the pastor used his remaining energies to write his memoirs, not just events but of his thoughts, what his philosophy and theology was and what concerned him about the future for his wife and son. The result is a thoughtful, heartwarming story about life, what is important, and how we want to be remembered.

Brilliant work

I have gone through the other reviews and I disagree with the criticism a few of them show. I have so far read over 30 books on people-communications skills and relationships, and I believe this is one of the best. It is unique in its approach, ethical, very easy to read and, more importantly, it works. It absolutely works. I was pleasantly surprised for the results when applying the techniques. It is one of those books you read and re-read. Interacting with others successfully is one of the most difficult, yet rewarding aspects of life. Good ideas although too verbose

"People Skills" is a primer on interacting with others. Bolton's premise is that our communication patterns are inherently faulty and he urges the reader adopt his framework to remedy. He presents - in order - listening skills, assertion skills, conflict-resolution skills, and collaborative problem solving skills, with each building upon the others. He blends keen insight into human nature, concepts of psychology and basic Judeo-Christian values into what appears to be a very effective methodology. The skills seem obvious, but in practice are rarely used, and in fact are rather uncomfortable when trying to start using.
I found Bolton's framework very valuable and thus far see its application can profoundly improve my own people skills in both a business and parental setting. Unfortunately, like most books of this type, the text is extremely verbose. Bolton possesses a style that is much less dry and wordy than many of his peers - in fact, I find it difficult to finish most of these types of books - but the ideas plus examples could have been distilled down to one-half the length of the 300 pages. The text is also very well referenced and footnoted, but - as a lay reader - I think the constant crediting other psychologists and philosophers confuse and muddy the message. This could be a book that one could return to periodically to refresh their skills, but its length will prevent the less diligent. I found myself taking detailed notes on each chapter for later referral; while a testament to the material, I wish the author had made it easier to digest.

Starts strong, ends weak

Most books give you 2-3 really good nuggets of insight, hidden in a dry prairie of "heard-it-all-before." Such is the case with People Skills. Most of the content is obvious - have a pleasant demeanor when listening, reflect what you've heard, and so on. Not very insightful.

However I did walk away with a few insights. For instance, as you're reading this review, you may be thinking "Do I agree with this reviewer?" That's the first barrier to effective communication. We all have biases, we all filter what we hear to fit our biases, and we need to learn to turn off that filter - at least momentarily - and truly listen to what others are saying, without judging it too quickly. That insight alone made this book a worthwhile read.

There are other insights, supported by interesting research, especially in the early parts of the book. Later parts of the book begin to feel cumbersome, especially the entire section on negotiating conflict, which is based on a multi-step process that can easily be capsized if the person you're confronting is uncooperative.

Overall - good book, a couple good insights, but over-long and toward the end becomes less practical.

This is an excellent textbook related to production and operations management. I have come to like it because of its highly effective usefulness, better presentation and very easy to understand design, type setting and description.

I have chosen this rating because I consider this textbook as one of the best in the market today. The main reason why I have decided to choose this very high rating for this textbook is that being a business and management professor at an American State University for the last four-and-a-half years, I have myself taught it in my 'BSAD0455 Production and Operations Management' class for several semesters. I have no hesitation or deliberation to state that this textbook is one of the most informative, reliable and best of its kind publications that I have come across so far in my academic career.

Being a mechanical engineer by trade, I have found this textbook as a useful addition for the industry practitioners like me because of its vast effectiveness from the industry perspective. I will strongly recommend this textbook equally to all of my friends, academics, experts, professors and practitioners as well as to my own State University faculty and staff members, students as well as the library resource centers.

Once again Lilly-Wilde has proven why she is untouchable as an author. I was completely enthralled in Touched By Him from the first sentence. Never would I ever think I could read not one, not two but THREE books that absolutely captured me and held me through to the words THE END!!! I cried, I laughed, I was so upset I almost through my kindle across the room and I wanted to fight!! Never have I ever read the work of an author who could reach me on so many levels and pull me thru so many emotions. When I started my journey in Untouched (Book1) and then Touched (Book2) I was captured from the start and Touched by Him did not let me down. Lilly-Wilde has a phenomenal way with words and the gift of story telling that no one could hold a candle too. I can not wait for the next release. Thank you the beautiful gift that is the story of Aiden and Aria. Chomping at the bit to see where their journey leads to next!!! 5 stars from one of your biggest fans...Lisa Upshaw

I seriously needed a moment to myself once I read Touched By Him. Just experiencing this book like no other and enjoying every moment of it. I've read a lot of books and this one just seemed to reach out to me. Making me feel every single emotion felt. If I could give more than 5 stars then I would. It deserves both the stars and the moon. That's how mind blowing this book was. Aiden and Aria, two souls who have been through hell and back. It was glorious traveling on their journey with them.

Not as amazed as everybody else.

Yes, this is a pretty good review book. It has drugs stuffed into tables, and even includes some good text in the chapters. Unfortunately, there just isn't enough info in the book for a pharm class or a USMLE review. Run and buy Lippincotts if you want the best pharm book on Earth. Ridiculously simple, has alot of great books but this really isn't one of them. It is ok but really isn't all that useful. GO BUY LIPPINCOTTS NOW....Believe me that will make your pharm experience simple as it can be.

What happened to illustrations???

This book has a decent amount of information, but it's a big disappointment after Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple, which is loved by all. It's as boring as the other pharm texts, except less comprehensive. If you are looking for a book similar to Micro Made Rid. Simple, only for pharmacology, probably the closest thing out there is Mediglyphics.

Powerful advice, way more value than the $7 price suggests

This book was a real eye opener. A better title might have been "how to get what you want", because it is less about saying 'no', and more about being able to take control of your life, and give you skills to stop others from being able to manipulate you.

Instead of fight or flight coping, the author introduces a 3rd option, talking assertively. And then he gives great examples using dialogues that show the exact words for many situations. I found the dialogues helpful, and the only reason I don't give this book 5 stars is that it is a bit academic in places. By skipping the filler/theory, and jumping right to the dialogues, you would gain all the benefit and save a lot of time.

This has helped me start to see many frustrations in my life were caused by not knowing how to assertively state what I wanted, so I would resort to fight (anger, frustration) or then flight if fight escalated too much. By being able to see examples of how to assertively state 'this is what I want', I feel this book has helped me discover a new way forward.

I'm looking forward to reading the book a second time, because although there are only a few techniques to learn (BROKEN RECORD, NEGATIVE ASSERTION, NEGATIVE INQUIRY, etc), really seeing how to use them is more than I can fully absorb and put into practice in my life in a single pass.

Too Basic for the Seasoned Engineer. Recommend: "Guide to Energy Management"

This book would be O.K. for an engineer just finding his/her way, it provides a good basic overview. As a licensed and LEED certified mechanical engineer, I bought this book to serve as a refresher in preparation to retest for the C.E.M, for reinstatement. After reading it cover to cover, I don't feel as though I got what I was expecting from this book. Update: The book to buy is "Guide to Energy Management", by Capehart, Turner and Kennedy.

I was expecting the new edition to have updated a few things, for example LEDs are still neglected in the lighting sections.

All in all it's still a good reference manual. The visual presentation of the material is disturbing; it's full of copy/pasted excel tables in low resolution.

I found useful information on energy saving ideas for production equipment, but not all chapters were as good. I would expect to see quite a lot of information on compressed air energy saving.
